Discussion: U.S. Negotiates $285 Million Cut To United Nations' Budget

To be fair, it’s also been a boogeyman of Republicans for long before they made the conversion to Russian puppets. It’s just that Trump is crazy enough to do what Reagan promised to.

No country benefits from UN more than United States. US pretty much designed UN to further its hegemonic interests including trade and Geo-politics. Once all the peace keeping and disease- fighting operations are unfunded to mention a few then world problems will fall on US’s lap to deal with it alone. But I believe other countries will step in to plug the hole. US will now find it hard to convince other powerful countries to go along with its goals in a diminished status.

Can’t have a world-class arms industry if all there is is peace everywhere.

Not that we have a world-class arms industry ( see F35 ).

There is that little thing known as over-reach. Dotard keeps taking swings at other nations and soon they won’t give two figs. The orangish dude that cries wolf and just cries, a lot, IOW.

In the macro scheme of things, how does going it alone in a connected world make any sense?

No one ever details “inefficiency and overspending.” Never.

Ya think?

I heard a mention of this on NPR this morning, and IIRC they said the overall budget was ~5B annually, and the U.S. typically pays about 20% of it. So that would presumably be about a 28% reduction in total support, according to that report, which is pretty significant.

I suppose he thinks they will come to heel if he dangles our monetary support over their heads.

So if the UN Budget is $5B and they cut THE UN BUDGET by $285M, that’s a 6% cut. Not peanuts, but not exactly shrinking it so it runs down the drain either. If the US foots 20% of the UN budget, that’s a $57M cut in the US share of the budget. In the federal budget that is peanuts or less. Trump’s family travel has cost us, supposedly, $10M in his first nine months in office. And my bet is that accounting is far from complete. One F-35 will end up costing $135M. Before adding the $26M engine. $57M? BFD.
