Discussion for article #233056

Lemme guess: Bill O’Reilly wasn’t available to join the review…

“We fully expect the board to take their time and carefully review the new policy and procedure to ensure an equitable outcome.”

So no review is better than a “biased” one?
How does this: “…the school formed a review committee of teachers, students and parents to decide whether the district should continue teaching the book.”
not match this:
"…Bakich told the Dallas Morning News that she hoped the Highland Park school district would create a “fair and balanced committee of professional educators and parents.” ??

Meg’s concern for the poor makes her sound like Ayn Rand, but without the Bakich.

…“a year-long undermining of American values.”

That’s odd because public schools are not in session year-round in Texas…

English class certainly might be “a year-long undermining of American values” if being an ignorant, small-minded fearful bigot with no idea what you were talking about was an American value. But it’s not. Easy mistake to make, though.

She might feel a panel made up of fellow Tea Party members and Fox News viewers and would be more fair and balanced (hmm, where did I hear that tagline before?)

But, but, what about all those gum’mint-controlled lie-baries they’re always telling kids to go to?

The Working Poor: Invisible in America is “sexually explicit”
and out of place in a high school English course, a parent has charged
in a formal complaint to the district.

I read both the above article and the original article and I’m still trying to figure out where the “sexually explicit” bit comes in. Or, does the complainer hold that words like “abortion” or “contraception” are “sexually explicit?” I’m inclined towards this interpretation because this “sexually explicit” accusation appears to be one of the tools that wingers use to manipulate a debate: accuse someone, a book, a work of art that they don’t like of being “sexually explicit” even if facts and research about human reproduction are germane to the discussion.

Funny that.

Any article about happenings in the Highland Park bubble need to have some understanding of what an amazingly bizarre and unrepresentative place it is. It’s 94% white, has a median household income of $149,000, and a typical housing price of about 5 times that of neighboring Dallas.

I was just about to quote the article “A Highland Park, Texas, parent last week dropped her challenge to a book on poverty” and add that anyone unfamiliar with that Dallas suburb might miss the the irony.

You can create a much larger and intolerant bubble to include the N. Dallas townships–
like Farmers Branch, Garland, Carrollton, Addison, Plano, Grapevine, Coppell-- and on and on.

From a marketing perspective I’m adroitly familiar with-- these areas are almost exclusively under the religious and political influences of Evangelical Christians.

So call me not surprised by the attempt at imposing a closed mindset
on the greater public of the local townships or via the school boards.

Because we all know that real American values include ignoring the plight of the poor. USA! USA! USA!

I think it’s Glenn Beck who is shopping a constitution class. Seriously. They tried to do it in my area here but the parental uproar was so great, they drove two of the school board members out the door.
