Discussion: Two New Troubling Signs For Alison Lundergan Grimes In Kentucky

Discussion for article #228976

She started good, but doesn’t know how to finish. Her refusal to acknowledge she voted for Obama was the last straw for Democrats in her state.

What folks don’t understand is there are a lot of Democrats in Kentucky. Without them a Democratic candidate doesn’t have a chance. A Democratic candidate has to walk a fine line between courting independents and Republicans and pissing off her own base.

Ras. polls is trying to prop up republicans, and Gallup has been horrible as a polling firm. What I have read is that Kentucky don’t want Obamacare repealed, because if it is they will lose their healthcare and expanded Medicaid. Allison needs to hammer this home.

Remember when reporters focused on facts and not opinion polls?

When a Democrat’s major message is that he/she is not really
a Democrat, what do you expect especially in a red state?
Grimes has been exposed as a colossal liar, period.

Maybe if the Democratic Senate candidate talked about Obama’s accomplishments, the voters might come to think more highly of him.

I understand KY Democrats’ disappointment and even resentment about Grimes not running a strong enough democratic campaign, but holy hogwash, this is NO reason to withhold a vote. i hope each and every Democrat in KY goes out there and fights like hell to unseat McConnell and VOTES for Alison Grimes. PRIORITIES.

So in retaliation, Democrats are going to vote for McConnell, or just stay home, which amounts to almost the same thing? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

You do know what would have happened had she said, “Yes, I voted for Barack Obama,” yes? The next day, McConnell, or some group supporting him, would have ads running 24/7 with that sound bite on it, with any explanation she might have made of that vote cut out of it.

Ras. polling is going to end up being the worse pollster in 2104. It is sad because they started with semi good polling until the last two weeks. Ras. has Ernst up 3 and PPP just did a poll and has Braley up 1. I think that Ras. polling is going to have to find a new pollster again.

How does anybody know Grimes has their back.

McConnell is vunerable, but Grimes didn’t take advantage of his greatest weakness. He really does want to take health insurance away from 1/2 million of them. Almost as important is his only skill is stomping his feet. Instead of making this campaign about McConnell, Grimes has allowed it to be about Obama. Her advisors should be fired. She shouldn’t be elected because she doesn’t know how to run an effective campaign.

really didn’t realize how anxious Kentuckians are to give up their health insurance

Smart Democrats in KY would forgive her for being reluctant to utter Obama’s name.

Why? Hmmmm, I think it has something to do with the color of his skin…

Uh, what lie is that? Refusing to answer a personal question?

@rssrai - yeah, when I read Rasmussen and Gallup I thought, OK nothing credible

and @giatny - bugger off

Obama did get elected twice. It’s not the worst thing in the world to admit she voted for him!

Ras has Obama approval at 49%, the highest, by far, of any of the pollsters. Since the Ras board booted Scot Rasmussen from his company, the Ras polls have dropped their Republican bias. I think the latest Ras numbers on McConnell v. Grimes are probably pretty close to the mark, and represent voter reaction to the debate. Here at TPM, most everyone thought Grimes had won the debate. I sure didn’t think so, and apparently neither do Kentucky voters.

There’s not a Democrat in Kentucky (except for the usual percent who are actually reliable Republican voters) who wouldn’t crawl across broken glass to vote against McConnell regardless of his opponent or candidate quality. She can’t win by firing up those Democrats in an attempt to make them vote harder.

The thing is, she’s not winning over anti-Obama people by pretending she didn’t vote for him either. She’s just coming off as incredibly weak and fake.

What are Obama’s poll numbers, and what are McConnell’s poll numbers? Which are higher?

Yep, I’ve posted this before and I suppose I’ll have to post it again before it sinks in on some people, but that was a trap question. The entire reason they asked it was to get a sound bite of her saying she voted for Obama to use in a scare ad like this:
Shadowed picture of Grimes in the lower right corner and larger washed out picture of Obama as the main image.

Que text and a voice over laying out random right wing conspiracy/dog whistle followed by sound bite of Grimes saying “I voted for Obama.”

Repeat for a few more conspiracies following each with a play of the sound bite, all while slowly zooming in until Obama and Grimes faces fill the screen.

Then finish with something like “She voted for Obama. Can you trust her to vote for Kentucky?” scare cord, fade to black.
If Democrats in Kentucky are to stupid to recognize the trap she was avoiding (and I’m not buying that they are upset, most of the in-state complaining seems to be coming from the media and conservatives, which should say something to the out of states dems joining those groups in complaining) than they deserve what they get for letting the Turtle win.
