Discussion for article #247676

Somewhere Trump is doing Snoopy’s happy dance. Crap it’s gonna be one of those weeks.

I am stunned that this hasn’t happened here again. The GOP likes to talk about how it’s Amurca vs. the terrorists, but we’re not getting hit while countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East are.

More details here:

Death toll now 13 26 31 34.

I would be the last to suggest that Drumpf, a notably irresponsible blowhard bereft of tact, wisdom, knowledge and, most of all, reasonably body-suitable fingers, is to blame.

I will say this: He ain’t helping.

September isn’t here yet. The October Surprise is just around the corner.

What a way to start the day. I’m with you, folks, of Brussels if only in spirit. I hope casualties remain low and that the authorities are able to obtain solid leads early.

@tiowally, I hate to admit it, but I am thinking the same thing. There is this real ugly part of me–I wish it weren’t there, but it is–that feels there are some American arch-conservatives who would turn a blind eye if they knew of plans for an October surprise. Ugly thoughts, I know, but I’ve never witnessed such sustained and growing hatred from some in this nation.

ETA: Well, our hopes the casualties would be low are out the window. Really sad.

I don’t think terrorism can be prevented completely, like cancer. It’s best to avoid public places, if possible and practical. The odds of being a victim are still with us.

I call for a cage match. Everybody’s god enters, only one leaves. If your god doesn’t show, you have to stop pretending that you serve some divine purpose.

Principle outcome of this terrorism: the West continues in to blow the Middle East to smithereens with a great deal of help from the inhabitants.

My condolences to all who have been killed or harmed by this violence.

The general assumption seems to be that a domestic terrorist attack would benefit The Donald. However, isn’t there a real possibility that the American public might instead want a steady and experienced hand at the helm?

Trump isn’t to blame. Not even remotely. He is a pawn in the arsenal of ISIS. There are 3 million peace loving American Muslims in the US, and it’s a fair bet that the more they are vilified that surely some of them might become radicalized and then carry out similar attacks here. That is the goal, that is the plan. Just as that is the plan in Europe. The more anti-Muslim fervor that can be drummed up in the EU, the more radicalization and the more attacks.

That being said, the attack in Brussels is likely a result of the capture of Salah Abdeslam. He was setting up a new round of Paris style attacks and his capture likely forced a fight or flight reaction from the remaining parts of the Cell. His capture likely stopped a large part of this attack from happening, but also forced those not attacked to speed up their plans less he reveal their names and locations. It doesn’t look like it now, but it is likely a victory.

Let’s see. How will this go for the Rightard Universe today: “Obama is in Cuba having photo ops with a Comminist’ dictator. He’s an amateur and weak on terrists’ . Prezdent’ Trump will be strong and bomb the shit out of them…blah, blah, blah…”

Obviously, the ONLY solutions even remotely acceptable to the Wingnut Republibaggers and assorted Neo Cons are carpet bombing, bizarre, incoherent threat tactics, and insulting and alienating huge sections of the world’s population.

Ahhh…It’s going to be quite a day on the campaign trail.

Drumpf will show great, and ermahgad’…smert’ leadership and his sheople will cheer…

In a word, no. I think an event like this in the U.S. would trigger a desire for retribution in a substantial chunk of the electorate, and a swaggering bully like Trump would be the beneficiary. Our civil liberties would take yet another unwarranted hit, and the Muslim communities in this country would pay a steep price.

And that, of course, is exactly the outcome the terrorists would like.

That Old Testament Eye- for-an Eye stuff makes you wonder about the holiness of the entire book sometimes. Only cowards use their “gods” as justification to do such savage things.

Aren’t we all sick of bullies “roughing up” others just because their leaders tell them it’s “the right thing to do?” How can anyone look at those photos and say such mindless violence is a solution to any of life’s problems? It just breeds more.

Ant colonies take greater care in staging wars.

Okay, you’re up to bat. What’s the solution? Unfortunatally, I’ve never heard one.

@JM_TPM

I am not so sure of that. I think JM is probably correct in his guess. By November, Trump’s complete lack of a grasp of foreign affairs will be on full display…it’s Hillary’s strong suit and his weak suit. So without a doubt the Clinton campaign will be going right for the jugular on this…strongly and often. The neocons in the GOP cannot stand the notion of a Trump presidency, btw…so they will be doing everything they can to pour cold water on it.

Meanwhile, Hillary has always gotten strong marks regarding foreign affairs, even grudgingly from republicans, screeches about Benghazi aside.

If terrorism becomes a major campaign issue, I think it will help Hillary a lot more than it will Trump. Bear in mind, that even today, Trump still doesn’t have the majority of his own party wanting him to be President. The latest NYT poll had about 48-49% behind that idea…which translates into probably less than 20% of the country.

Who would the “steady and experienced hand” be? The former Secretary of State, whose neocon policies continued Bush’s foreign policy, and who just spoke to AIPAC without once mentioning the occupation?

Sanders’ strong suit is his recognition of the central role of Saudi Arabia in all this. He’s the one with practical wisdom here. But not I assume who you mean by “experienced.”

We have so many guys with guns doing drive by and mass shootings at schools/malls/movie theaters that the ocassional church bombing and church executions seem to be overlooked. Our religious attacks seem to target women at Planned Parenthood through governmental-staged court battles.
