Class lady, and she really blew people away when she decided to shed the “she can only do simple comic roles” nonsense and gave an Oscar nominated performance for her serious and dramatic role in Ordinary People.
She had great presence, Carl Reiner knew instantly she was Laura Petrie. Her and Van Dyke had perfect chemistry, just a brilliant show that a lot of people still enjoy, including a lot of young people who have discovered it.
Bummer. The Dick Van Dyke Show is one of my faves.
