Between this and the tied election up there, Alaska’s been busy.
It’s been reclassified as a 7.0. Roads have collapsed.
Wow. A 7 is huge.
Tsunami warning has now been cancelled.
Apparently, the Trans Alaska pipeline was shut down to assess for damage.
7 is a pretty substantial quake. The USGS has it at orange so there is the possibility of fatalities. Its also awfully cold up there to have to be running out of buildings into the street, especially if some buildings are damaged.
Its center was only 7 miles from Anchorage
They also have very few hours of daylight.
Snow in the forecast tonight…
USGS has the initial at 7.0, with multiple significant aftershocks, 3 of 4-5 mag.
(however, if you are nerdy, the true mag number can vary even a month or more after the fact- why? I do not know)
There was a 5.8 aftershock directly under Anchorage. That probably did as much (if not more) damage than the initial quake.
Is this anywhere near the Palins - will they disappear ?
Ooh ouch. Where the epicenter is and how deep it is really affects the damage caused. The first Christchurch earthquake (in which no official deaths were reported) was a 7.1, the 6.2 aftershock four months later was located directly under the city and only 5 km deep. It killed 185 people.
Edit: finished incomplete sentence and corrected depth of feb 22 quake
There’s a price to pay for having all those scenic mountains visible out your kitchen window.
We here in California think the people in Alaska are crazy.
On the other hand, we have rush-hour traffic jams that contain more people than the entire state of Alaska.
Alaska, at least southern Alaska, is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. It’s a tribute Anchorage home builders that Mr. Slaton’s multi-story house is still standing.

No wonder Dump was so eager to lend assistance.
[The earthquake] also threw a full-grown man out of his bathtub.
