A lot of folks here (and I love ya’all) don’t get what happened on Tuesday. On that day the country we loved died. It was killed by voters who have elected a radical basic change here, Nothing, not one thing will be recognizable in a couple years. ACA gone, medicare replace by worthless “savings vouchers” (think trump paychecks to contractors), social security gone, media outlets scrutinized and closed down if not following party line. Lists of Mosques made up…all Muslims to be scrutinized for loyalty (so much for the 1st amendment)
And I’m just getting started.

We all know how much Trump loves the police forces, and the adoration is mutual. So it shouldn’t come as no surprise that he plans to install another federal police department alongside the FBI to directly support the local men in blue on the street level. Since this is Trump doing it the Oath Keepers are fully on board.
I have it on good account that this new department is supposed to be called General Enforcement and Stability Policing. It’s a somewhat unwieldy name, but I am sure somebody can come up with a snappy acronym.

Be Afraid, Be very very afraid. I’m white and female and I’m afraid. Now I understand better what that means. The tweeting Prez elect will continue to retaliate against any dissent. For years he insulted and attacked everyone, and today he even tweets against the anti TRUMP protestors as unfair, That is frightening. Which cabinet member will change his diaper and keep an eye on the pacifiers.

Yes, he can do a lot of damage in four years. But we need to see his worst. The worse it is, the easier it will be to raise the resistance. I do not think it is a foregone conclusion that he will replace three Supreme Court justices. If I were Ginsberg or Breyer, or even Kennedy, they would have to cart me off in a body bag. And while the odds of him getting an Alito style justice are high, I think they are (perhaps ever-so-slightly) lower than if Cruz were in his position. My biggest concern is that progressives turn inwards. Retreat into their bubble and just talk amongst themselves. Double down on the rhetoric that has not connected with the folks that voted this guy into office. I’ve done this myself. But it is not a long-term solution.
It makes me wonder just how many Grand Dragons there are in the country? Will there be enough to fill all the posts, or will he have to import some from Russia?
Hmmmmm.

Our job, as the Loyal Opposition Party, is to document all of this and make sure it gets put front and center in the spotlight. We have an opportunity here to discredit the Republican party for the remainder of the century.
Just keep throwing gasoline on the dRumpfster fire. Every day. Burn it hot and burn it out thoroughly and fast. there’s going to be a bit of scarring, and it’ll hurt like Hell itself, but the cancer will be completely burned out at the end of it.

Hey, could have been worse. He could have described them as “racially sensitive”… As in, we are sensitive little whiny babies who are getting steadily outnumbered by “others” not of our pure lineage.
Now we know who we really are as a country. Some of us vote to return to a time when male white folks had everything and some of us had to polish shoes for a living. It is in front of our eyes and undeniable…we are a good percentage racist!!!
A large enough percentage to sway an election for the presidency.
The denials are loud and aghast that anyone could say such a thing. The racism began to bubble to the surface at the election of a black man, you know, take our country back. Now it is right out in front of God and everybody else, as in the whole world.
They will say that can’t be because, you know, the constitution, the statue of liberty, exceptionalism, we’re the good guys and on and on to justify what we do.
I’m 73 years old and grew up in a house full of bigots so I heard all the crap repeated until I became a Marine and left. I was called a “N” lover just for applauding the civil rights legislation of the sixties. Here we are again and I will guess that the gutting of the voting rights act is just the beginning. I can hardly believe we are here again but this is apparently where we want to be as a country.
I would end with “God help us” but he can’t save us from ourselves.

The Guardian ran a series on Post-Capitalism last year. This guy, for example, notes the repeating boom-and-bust cycles and subsequent shrinking of the social state. At the same time, “the market”, the engine of the capitalist system, begins to lose meaning. I guess it’s is nice for Ryan and the GOP to offer capitalist answers to problems that might have existed decades ago, but largely they are passing into a realm of irrelevance. We need our politicians to articulate a positive vision of the future beyond “Make American Great – Again.” Kind of hard to imagine, but members of congress and the executive need to be able look beyond current notions of the nation state, work, and even value. The “market” no longer externalizes information in setting “prices.” We have much more, and much better, information that suggests old-school market pricing can be deceptive and even harmful.
Peter Drucker wrote the book on this over two decades ago, so it’s not too soon to have our major parties get real about what the emerging economy might look like and how the rules have to change. More recently, the Guardian has even ceased to be polite. For them, work on this transition has become imperative.
But neoliberalism no longer works. It is broken. If it survived it would have delivered at best zombie growth fuelled by central bank money and at worst stagnation. But it will not survive. Last summer I predicted that if we do not break with the economics of high inequality, high debt and low productivity, populations will vote to dismantle the global order. With Brexit and Trump that process is inexorable – and the next wave of the tsunami will hit Italy and Austria in their plebiscites on 4 December.
In the next weeks, our denial reflexes will be in full swing. Like Auden’s generation we will “cling to our average day”. But one set of people now faces a moment where only honesty will suffice. It is the economists, journalists, civil servants, bankers and policy wonks who have rubbished the idea of the existential threat.
They claimed the capitalism of the past 30 years was merely the inner essence of the system revealed, unimprovable unless by the privatisation of the last hospital and the decline of union density to zero. They were wrong; they need to place their intellectual firepower and resources – as their counterparts did in the era of Keynes and Roosevelt – in the service of designing an alternative system.
