Trump admitted to a mistake, which only happens when he crosses the base enough that they get angry. This is where he supported “both sides” in Charleston came from, knowing if he goes against what the base wants he will get their ire. In some ways, Trump is riding a tiger of hate, and occasionally he gets a taste of that and backs down.
He’s basically a coward and bully, afraid to stand up to anyone, yelling nasty stuff until someone tries to hold him to account, and scurrying to keep in the good graces of whoever challenges him that can actually hurt him. The Republicans will allow him to continue as long as he keeps the base motivated with hate, as they think that will keep them in power now…that’s just so damaging to the nation but they don’t care anymore.
I honestly never thought I’d see one of the political parties go along with something like this, I always assumed that there would be a limit beyond which their American patriotism would kick in. It’s obvious I was wrong, the Republicans care about themselves, power, and keeping in the good graces of the oligarchs (apparently now including Russian ones). It’s a sad day for the nation, worse because nothing will come of this at least until November, and maybe not then if Democrats can’t overcome everything being stacked against them and gain some measure of control back.
IIRC in that situation Hitler said the Poles had been “very, very unfair” to this radio station.
Trump is a psychopathic liar. If he now says he misspoke, why didn’t he correct the record right away instead of waiting to be called out? It’s not as though it was not known what he said. As well, much of his other statements at the press conference confirm what he originally believes. It stinks to high hell. Not. Our. President.

Coming from a guy who said there were fine people on both sides at Charlottesville, and who had to be dragged kicking and screaming to disavow David Duke, there is nothing here.
Trump’s real confusion here is that he’s been saying all his nonsense since before the election. Hillary totally blasted him for it during a debate and we now know his whole campaign was buried in Russian patsies while he pretended he knew nothing. So why does it change anything just because he said it in front of Putin?
It’s like the media and politicians treat domestic and foreign affairs as if they’re completely separate. So you can say anything you want including trashing Clinton and Obama’s foreign policies in ways that aid our enemies, just as long as you’re on American soil when you say it. Maybe someone should tell the media that our news doesn’t stop at the borders and all the times Republicans praised Putin to hurt Obama actually hurt America.
