I suppose I’m echoing every Republican in the country today to point out that Trump’s unbelievably erratic and impulsive. He seems to live about 95 percent in the moment. But I think that militates against some ongoing alliance with the Democrats. That, and the fact that the Democrats hate him. This thing with Schumer and Pelosi wasn’t doing him a favor on their part—it was like rolling a drunk, basically. But who knows? Who knows with this guy?
I disagree with the idea that Congress needs to know what Trump will sign, for two reasons. First of all, he lacks any experience or understanding of policy, so presumably they can write a much better law than anything he could come up with. Second, I believe he will sign anything and call it a “win.” Why complicate things by delving into the cobwebs of his thought process?
agreed. Lndsey blows with the wind. and he is capale od quite heinous votes …
But he never swallows.
Brilliant analogy/analysis !!!
He must have felt personally humiliated by McConnell and Ryan over their embarrassing attempt at health care legislation. McConnell was so desperate for a win he lost all credibility with Trump. And I think Trump looks at Ryan and all he sees is an empty suit. Thirty minutes with Schumer/Pelosi and he has his first victory. Not much but way more than the bumbling Republicans could muster. All of a sudden Trump says to himself, ‘I had a good week’. Yeah he’s crazy, but he feels good. And that’s all that matters. Of course, Irma is getting all the attention so maybe his mood will change.
“I’ve never heard of a president simply saying, ‘Congress, you do it,'” he grumbled.
like he did on healthcare?
Can we just have the moderators change the forum’s settings so that NCSteve’s comment from a few days ago automatically appear as the first post of every trump-related article?

Always amusing to see how many ways they can find to pretend like he’s a normal person psychologically capable of doing normal things.
I’m a bit irritated at Schumer and Pelosi pretending that 1) any agreement with Trump has a chance in hell of being carried out and 2) that they seem to think an agreement between the three of them magically puts a bill on Trump’s desk. Have none of them seen Schoolhouse Rock’s “How a Bill Becomes a Law”?? This entire exercise smacks of a PR stunt, but I’ll be happy if it does result in actual legislation. Given the obstinacy of the House, I’m not optimistic. Then again…
Or soap?
You would be correct. Dave Weigel at the WP found four of them in an hour and confirmed they all voted legally in New Hampshire.
“I want to hear him say what he’ll sign,” complained Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ).
You don’t need to - he’ll sign anything because he doesn’t care a whit about policy and cares far more about looking like he’s getting something done.
Congressional Republicans are such snowflakes! They’re unable to do anything unless commanded by one of their ‘fearless’ leaders.
Grow a pair, boys and girls!!
The agreement trump made with Pelosi and Shumer passed both houses of congress overwhelmingly this morning and is on the way to the orange cretins desk for signing.
Yeah, I have caught up with that since posting. I was not opposed to it, mind you, merely shocked that Trump actually did the right thing. (Now let’s see how long it takes him to sign the bill!) He probably calculated that this would lead to some good press for himself, which is all he really wants.
Trump has a survival instinct. Without Bannon and Priebus around, there wasn’t anyone in the WH to continue to indoctrinate him on the use of debt ceiling leverage. The debt ceiling as a political tool makes no sense to most Americans or to business. Trump probably felt like Ryan and McConnell were going to play him like they did with the ACA. He’s also enraged at them for #trumprussia, failure of ACA repeal, and the Russia sanctions bill.
With everything that has happened this summer from #trumprussia to ACA repeal defeat to his nazi benders to #charlottesville to DACA to an unstable foreign policy to natural disasters and several resignations, Trump didn’t see much of a path with the Republicans.
Democrats might be able to play him to get some ACA stabilization and a DACA fix, but Trump may be able to extract concessions on taxes and the wall. That said, I think Harvey and Irma are basically going to constrain options, which will give the Dems the leverage on DACA/ACA fixes.
When the bill moved to the Senate, Trump alternately called for a repeal-and-delay measure and for doing nothing and “letting Obamacare fail,” depending on how he felt and with whom he had met that particular day.
That’s because donnie is weak. Weak-minded, weak-willed, and (most importantly in his mind, since he seems to try to claim the opposite quite often) weak-fingered (because of those tiny hands). In the past, he could come off as “strong”, but only because his inherited wealth hid his myriad weaknesses. Now that he has a role in making policy for the nation - and fails badly at it while changing position faster than a small-fingered person trying to hold onto a life raft in a hurricane-flooded city (flooded by the biggest hurricane ever, beleive me) - his overall weakness is on full display.
That Trump is using the Democrats to cover for him is hardly a blunder. And seen historically, it’s hardly a new role for the Democrats.
Yeah, exactly what member of Congress still thinks trump has even a single clue about leadership? Or that he’s got any inclination to work for anything?
He just wants you guys to bring it right to his pudgy little hands. And he wants to insult you and belittle you at his whim, because it’s fun. He doesn’t take any of this seriously, because he’s too stupid.
I’ve just got to roll my eyes when any of them whine that they’re waiting for trump to tell them what to do. You dumbasses always knew he was an ignorant dumbass! Give it up already!
Going along with the increasingly obvious mental aberration that allows trump to live only in the moment, it probably wasn’t too hard for Pelosi to sweet-talk him into saying something like, “Hey DACA kids, it’s 6 whole months away! I mean, who knows what can happen?”
I am secretly delighted that the Democrats have correctly diagnosed him and are now exploiting his illness.
