McConnell is up for reelection in 2020 and is reportedly none too popular in his home state, where Trump has a much higher approval rating. McConnell’s brown-nosing is strictly out of fear for his own seat in the Senate. His popularity rating in KY went up when he strong-armed the Kavanaugh appointment through the Senate, according to an article in The Intercept.

Here’s your starting point, ‘There is no wall.’ Get over it, find some combination of things that are important to Democrats, always remembering there is no wall, DACA, faster and fairer asylum courts, assure Texans no one’s coming for their land, upgrade the existing barriers, start to look at the conditions that put people on the road north and do something constructive about them…Tell McConnell to do his fucking job. Democrats have already compromised by passing the republican Senate’s bill. Coming back with I’ll take nothing less than 5 billion dollars and the senate bill isn’t an offer. Holding 800,000 people hostage to your demand is even less.

So what we are witnessing is a sort of a Mexican standoff, but with federal workers in the middle. And yes Trump doesn’t know how to make a deal, McTurtle doesn’t want to take the fall, and the Dems are righteously pissed off because past “deals” they made were rejected.
So what to do? McTurtle and Pelosi could make a deal, but then there’s Trump’s cult followers.

Plus, other than oblivious 1%, I doubt that many people agree with making people work for an extended time without getting a paycheck. And by being forced to work without pay, they can’t go out and rustle up some other work to pay the bills left behind by the $0.00 paychecks.

I am not a McConnell fan, but the only thing I will say is this: when dealing with a toddler that will not listen to reason, the only thing you can do to teach them not to tantrum is let them feel the full natural repercussions of their behavior. If Republicans fix this - and at some point they may have to - he’s just going to do it again soon. If Republicans take the hit - and they are and they know it - while also letting him take the hit, they may prevent these showdowns and dumb decisions closer to the election where it will matter to their election prospects more closely.
Again, I’m not defending him or suggesting this is the right way, but perhaps that’s what he’s thinking.

I think you are on the right track here.
However, I also think that Yertle, just like Spankee, hasn’t figured out yet that the world has changed around him overnight. The old strategies may not work any more. I’ll bet Yertle’s fuming and doesn’t know how to get out of this without completely losing face.
