Of course Trump is completely ignorant as to trade laws and historical effects of tariffs, as well as economics in general leaving him an utter menace to our economy, nation, and our standing in the world.
In every political intrigue novel there are immediate and effective plans put into action by outside forces to quell such disruption, so one wonders if those measures are being secretly planned already, or is this the stuff of fiction?
Because now they can tell the americans that anything that looks like a concession would never make it through their legislature. You donât negotiate with terrorists, at least not openly. This is another âMexico will pay for the wallâ moment.
Even people who know him well call Trump an idiot. The guy took NAFTA and free trade as hostages long ago and thinks he will impress his base by doing what weak politicians failed to do: raise tariffs and walk away from free trade.
This will be an utter disaster for large segments of the US economy. Heâs doing this because he is desperate, as Josh has aptly described. There is no way out of the Mueller investigation and the âno collusionâ stuff doesnât work because Mueller has established that what the Russians did to interfere in our elections was illegal, which makes the campaignâs actions (and those of its individual associates) potentially illegal.
Where I think a few Dems should go is to identify what the Russians did as an act of war and label any collaborators as âtraitorsâ, because that âtreasonâ is what this is all about. An assault on our Democracy is an assault against the foundations of our Constitutional Republic and that is indistinguishable from an act of conventional war (even if mainstream constitutional legal scholars are too timid to go there and consider the implications). Calling Trump and his associates traitors who sold out their country for a buck will force his resignation.
So he climbs down. The tariffs will never happen and whatever tiny incremental changes in NAFTA Mexico and Canada agree to, which will mostly be things they wanted all along, heâll tweet out as Great Deals he got by threatening very tough tariffs on steel an aluminum. Strong.
And, meanwhile, in the minds of the 33% Tox News crowd, heâs already put the tariffs into place and our steel and aluminum industries have come roaring back adding millions of jobs. Spontaneous demonstrations of approval broke out across the nation to celebrate his brilliance which the Fake News refused to cover.
The whole damn right-of-center contingent was willing to call everyone with questions about invading Iraq âobjectively pro-Saddamâ. So a little symmetry wouldnât hurt.
So this is Trumpâs Art of the Deal in play. Looks more like extortion and imperialism. More bridges burned and another wiorldwide Great Recession canât be far behind. This time it will be with hyper-inflation. TARPs wonât get any better for global vulture capitalists like Trump than one designed and marketed by the Ivanka Trump line for the Top 1% oligarchs.
You all realize that NAFTA has actually worked. There are fewer economic immigrants coming to the United States from Mexico now. That was one of NAFTAâs goals.
Heâs a dick, pure and simple. He spouts off with a âsolutionâ then runs around tweeting angrily looking for the âproblemâ. Heâs been whining for 50 years and heâs stuck on the same olâ whine.
MORON AND LIAR. The U.S. goods trade deficit with Canada was $12.1 billion in 2016, a 22.1% decrease ($3.4 billion) over 2015. The United States has a services trade surplus of an estimated $25 billion with Canada in 2016, down 10.4% from 2015.
If my math is right, thatâs a 12.5 billion NET SURPLUS.
The concerted effort of Donald Trump to tank the American economy is far and away the biggest story today. The SOB is costing millions of Americans billions. Donât believe me, go look at your 401K.
