I don’t think he is irrelevant at this point. His is the wrecking crew and he is working hard at it. Forget affecting legislation and being a world leader, his directives are to destroy the stability of this country. That is it, period. After that, then he is irrelevant, a clown only.
Josh wrote a piece discussing Trump being compromised. Not a revelation with a lot of us. It is obvious he is at least colluding. But being compromised is a bit different. I have been working along with the idea it is all about money. Which it most likely is. But Trump’s behavior lately has been past the point of explaining it as style and trying to push through his pet causes and further his finances. It is equally obvious that Trump is a failed leader, even if seen as a dictator in the making. He is incompetent. His dictatorship does not have a long shelf life.
His actions are akin to the idiot safe cracker who uses the short fuse all the time. Not wise. It will not benefit him in the long run. So, if he has purpose and is still going to the most ludicrous lengths, exposing himself daily, it has to have purpose for someone other than Trump and the local crowd. He is willing to use that short fuse regardless of the personal risk.
That means serious leverage on the man. I am truly wondering what the extent of that compromise is. We have the statements in the Dossier as a possible clue, but I wonder what else. It must be bigger than we normally discuss. The salacious side is embarrassing as hell, but it is out there if real. The damage is negligible to a degree even if proven true, he is the (p)resident after all. So what might it be.
I wonder if Russia and Putin can pull the carpet out from under him in terms of finances. A pull of the thread and the Trump empire comes tumbling down both for Trump and family. Or is there evidence of crime(s) far worse than have been discussed. This man is willing to self destruct (on the wrong side of history) for what reason?

You may think this is hyperbole but I honestly don’t think this country will ever recover from this nightmare. Never. W was bad enough but after Pres. Obama was elected, I think there was sense, internationally, that America could redeem itself because there was a majority of sane people here.
It’s not so much that a majority of the country is insane but that the VERY deranged minority is in power. Whatever is left of this country by 2020 can’t be trusted by other governments to do the right thing. They know the extent of Russian infiltration of our political system along with the unbridled greed of the 1%. Why would they trust us in the future?

Agreed. The feral trumpers follow their leader every step. It’s anyone else who calls themselves “Independent” that isnt going along with the nightmare anymore. And no, I don’t know if there’s enough support statewide from them to carry “short eyes” to the finish line.

The reason I believe this is because I see it as a death of the family. People who’ve been burned in the past by those they see as unreliable time and time again can only give them but so many chances to redeem themselves.

It may be what he has to do in order to try to save himself and his family from economic ruin, or at least extreme embarrassment and possible criminal prosecution. But, what of those Republicans in Congress and many state governments who seem to be OK with his doing so, or even aiding and abetting it? Are they compromised, too? Or, are they just OK with destabilizing and damaging the country in order to push through long-time Republican wet dream priorities? Perhaps it’s a little of both.

Yep, good question.Too many people have the view that all the work was put into this simply to install Trump in office. That can be simply one branch of a large operation. In fact, if you look at the history, they have been plugging at Trump alone for decades. Logic would say they have been winnowing with other venues for just as long. This did not happen in the last two or three years, it is a process that has been in place for years. A lot of people have forgotten the lessons of the cold war.

There was a Michael Lind piece in Salon some years ago on the Tea Party “elites”, describing them as essentially 1st tier individuals on a local basis (like the guy that owns the biggest car dealership in a small town) but 2nd tier individuals on a national basis, behind tech, hollywood, multi-national corp, and washington elites. These folks’ priorities are to crush bottom up pressure from workers and minorities in their own communities while stave off top down pressure from the feds in the form of taxes, regulations, and employee protections. It makes a lot of sense to me that they empathize with the gangster-ish attitudes of trump and the russian oligarchs. There’s an extremely cynical dimension to the capitalism of these tea party types, like they’ve given up on the hard work ethos, and even though many have them have already “won” the economics game, they harbor attitudes that wealth acquisition and prosperity is really about being the biggest and best thief.

You can definately tell that the new game of the wealthy (and their enforcers) has nothing to with capitalism that creates jobs and growth for the economy. Gary Cohn got a somewhat rude awakening when his 1% compatriots decided to be honest and tell the truth that they weren’t going to hire more workers with the tax cut fiasco. They’ll hoard all their money and feel good about it. End of that story.

Well, he did say he should have let those three kids rot in a Chinese jail because one of the dads wasn’t sufficiently grateful. So he’s already established he’s not above leaving Americans out to dry in a foreign country. Especially if you’re black, brown, or Muslim.

Roy Moore was removed from the state courts not once, but twice for not following or implementing the law. He is being pushed by the Leninist Steve Bannon and the anti constitution Trump. No thanks. If Alabama votes in this abomination the other 49 states must draw up papers of succession and force Alabama off the island. For the good of the rest of the country.

I agree. At least, not in my lifetime. Without even considering the destruction of environmental and moral standards, it’ll take, at minimum, a generation to remove the dismantlers of democracy from the courts alone.
Indeed, I actually envy people who still have hope our nation will survive this onslaught.
