Discussion: Trump To Sign Order Relaxing Rules That Bar Religious Groups From Political Activity

Constitution, what Constitution?

The White House order declares that “it is the policy of the administration to protect and vigorously promote religious single-issue voters as long as they vote only for Republicans.”

Good…now the Church of the FSM has a few things to say…

I’m imagining a tightrope walker who is balancing himself with a pole. One end of the pole is weighted with policies that fuck the people who support him. The other end is weighted with red meat for those supporters.

The Johnson Amendment is written law. Last time I checked that trumps exec orders.

I have no problem with this as long as it is accompanied by stripping all churches of their tax-exempt status.

And if that doesn’t coincide with this impotent EO allowing churches to engage in political activity - which, of course, includes using tax-exempt charitable donations to fund political PACs and Supers - then “the rest of us” need to form a united “church” to get the benefits of all these tax deductions on political contributions.

All churches are built on doctrines founded on the principle of “trust us, have faith” so there is no reason to preclude a church with equally phantom core beliefs.

Awesome news for his supporters who can be excited about this meaningless sop in terms of their daily lives, while their healthcare goes down the crapper and the 1% get their tax deductions.

Probably not a coincidence this is coming out today. Red meat for the base.

He’s awful heavy handed with these executive orders.
It’s almost like there is no GOP House and Senate majority.

I thought these EOs usurped Congressional authority. I thought they were unConstitutional.
Oh yeah, that’s right; that was last year, when the Kenyan Muslim was in office.

Are we sure Trump doesn’t have a favorite third cousin who’s a megachurch pastor or constitutional law attorney? Everything else he does is for the grift. I know, I know; Trump’s Razor says, “No, he’s just taking the most stupid choice.” Still, it’s fun to imagine all the reasons the dinosaurs died out 5900 years ago.

Papers for the incorporation of the “Church of the Trump Family Golden Fleece, LLC.” being filed in 5, 4, 3, …

Of course, he has thought this through and he knows that Muslims etc have religious groups too…

The idiots EO does not cancel out the Johnson law.

The administration appears to have backed away from an earlier draft order leaked to The Nation that would have allowed religious groups to refuse to hire or serve LGBT individuals.

Less “backed away” than a realization that they would be defendants in federal court this afternoon.

Churches will live to regret weakening of the Johnson Amendment (if indeed an EO carries any real weight). Just imagine the church council meetings over next year’s budget – ministerial salaries, facilities maintenance, education, missions, and now candidate X and candidate Y and candidate Z. A number of parishioners will just stay away because of the extra noise, especially in an election year. Long term churches will lose members with overt political activity taking over.

They constantly freak out about sharia law, yet they do everything they can to increase the influence of religion in government and people’s lives.

They never seem to see that.
