Discussion: Trump To Punish China With Tariffs On $60 Billion Worth Of Chinese Products

All China needs to do is to redeem $60 billion of US Bonds that it holds.

That will be a devastating blow to the international branch of Trumpanomics.

Actually he’s punishing Rachel Brand for making him look bad when she resigned. Her crew at WalMart is going to be flat out trying to keep their Chinese supply chain in line when (if) this goes down. Higher prices for his base? General chaos in a massive trade segment? Pffft. Collateral damage.

Actually, this should read, Trump to Punish American Businesses with Tariffs on $60 Billion worth of Chinese Products."

The Chinese don’t have to pay the tariffs, American importers do. And the importers will pass the increased costs (plus overhead) to their customers. If Chinese imports fall off, the Chinese will just find other markets elsewhere. Pulling the US out of TPP has left China free to negotiate trade deals with the rest of the Pacific Rim that TPP kept them out of.

Trump: So I should do this, right Larry?

Kudlow: Sure, whatever, as long as you pass more tax cuts - that is the important thing.

Trump: Aren’t you skipping something Larr?

Kudlow: Oh, right. You are the greatest American president ever and your face will someday be on every coin in the world.

Trump: Done. I am going to announce the tariffs.

Dems need to be all over this, touting this as a tax increase, rethugs are infamous for adding fees, and refusing to call them taxes.

Not all tariff-related, of course. Facebook selloff a significant factor. But looming trade war is a biggie.

It’s a problem that too many Americans prefer the sugar-high rush of a short-term action over a policy that considers long-term consequences. The idea of punishing China, Mexico et al seems to give the Trumpers a thrill, damn the consequences.

Indeed, the concept of cause and effect, as well as unintended consequences, seems to be alien to them. While something needs to be done about China’s infringement of intellectual property rights, tariffs are not the answer.
