Carson is no rocket scientist, yet he’ll be running HUD. I guess this means Trump will have to find another person that is also not a rocket scientist. To run NASA.
Exactly.
Michael Brown was a Commissioner for an organization that registers Arabian horses. How that qualifies someone to head FEMA boggles my mind.
Now Donald Tang picks Carson to head HUD. I guess he doesn’t feel that department is important, else he would have hired someone with a better background than just being Black.
I really wish I could
this comment a 1000 times.
Well said. Everything.
NPR interviewed Armstrong Williams this morning. When pressed about Carson’s qualifications to run HUD Williams reeled off a litany of housing related knowledge Carson had “picked up” over his many years, evidently in addition to running a medical practice. Williams ticked off taxes, zoning, permits, construction and a few other housing related areas of expertise Carson had been “reading about” and was sure he’d be up to speed on how to manage an entire Cabinet department if confirmed. What evidence he had this was true wasn’t pursued by NPR. No surprise that.
These Cabinet positions and other agencies are staffed with professional people, many with long careers and intense loyalties to their job. They want to see their departments run correctly. It’ll be interesting to see how they react after Trump has installed a cast of characters wholly unsuited and unqualified to lead them, and in some cases actually predisposed to gut and trash the very agency they’re heading.
A Confederacy of Dunces
It’s possible you could bring in a crackerjack administrator who could successfully run an agency like HUD without having the technical knowledge. Plenty of CEO types do well in a new position without a lot of experience with the widget in question. You get the shop running effectively and leave the strategy to the overall administration and trust your own technical people to get that part right. But Trump has no urban poverty strategy other than being Trump, which he thinks suffices for everything. And Carson couldn’t be trusted to efficiently order paper products for an eight-person office.
A Duncy of Confederates

All of this would be funny, but for the fact we’re going to have to live in this hell-hole, at least for the next four years. That is, assuming we don’t get blown up before that time expires.
That works if the CEO is enthusiastic about the company’s product, trusts and rewards the people below him doing the hard work of day-to-day operations, and feels the ultimate success of the company is a goal he believes in and failing to perform well will ultimately reflect poorly on him.
Carson doesn’t believe in HUD’s functions, thinks those that will be working for him are lazy, entrenched government functionaries probably incapable of making it in a "real " job, and likely thinks the destruction and failure of HUD would prove it is unnecessary. Hence tanking it, instead of being a black mark on his legacy, would be a badge of honor among the people he cares about impressing and currying favor with.
Everything about Carson’s nomination augers against thinking all will be well because he’ll merely find competent people to manage it in his stead. The same can likely be said for every single person Trump nominates to help run the country.
A little reminder about closet queen Armstrong Williams…
You know, let’s say Trump develops a terminal case of sudden-onset gout and departs this plane of existence. We’d still, I think, have massive problems left relearning how to govern ourselves. The GOP and all its voters have sunk so far in radical irrationality that we’ll have ongoing crises until we can somehow, and don’t ask me, fix it. Not super hopeful these days, I’m afraid.
Donald is so removed from mainstream society he just has this vague knowledge of HUD .
Oh yeah that’s the agency that helps those poor black people.
Don’t they do section 8 or something?
Those people would never live at a Trump address
You know he has no knowledge or understanding of what the agency actually does and I suspect that is the case for Mr. Ben Carson also
Send in the Clowns… Do a follow up on this man’s “gifted conjoined surgeries” and discover he’s a butcher. Then take a look at the painting of himself he hangs in his foyer, with him and Jesus… Clearly, Carson has mental illness. Sadly, he won’t stand out in this next administration.
Pathetic. Although licensed to do brain surgery, this moron is probably not smart enough to feed himself, much less run a large cabinet force. sad.
Thanks for pointing this out. I have read the stories, and they cast serious doubt on his ethics, and possibly his competence as well.
Same qualifications Betsy DeVos has to be Education Secretary: She has no teaching degree, never went to public school, never sent her children to public school, and has been on a jihad to defund and destroy public education via private charter schools and education “vouchers” under the banner of “school choice.”
Even the leaders of the charter school movement are less than enthusiastic about a DeVos appointment, and fear her support of using vouchers to divert precious and limited public education dollars to private Christian schools will discredit their movement.
He’s dumber than Sarah Palin.
Someone wake Ben up to tell him the news.
My thought exactly. It won’t be a big stretch to “Heckuva job Benny!”
This actually makes complete sense. His candidacy was all a money making scam from the outset, whether by Carson himself or his “financial advisers” running his campaign. Do you know how much graft and flim-flam he could execute in this particular position?
