Yeah, who knows what calculus is at work here. There’s also a lot of speculation that the Pence leak is just a trial balloon, although the IN Republicans would have to have an alternative gubernatorial candidate file by July 15 - coincidentally, the day of the announcement. So I guess we’ll find out tomorrow.
If Trump picks Rubio, he’ll have to walk it back immediately. The Constitution says that the electors from Florida can’t vote for both president and vice president candidates from Florida. Trump’s legally been a Florida Man since 2019. (see below)
If Trump wins and Florida’s 30 electoral votes make the difference, then those thirty would have to vote for Trump and someone else for VP. Then the Senate picks the next VP and, assuming there’s 50 Democrats, you’d have a Trump-Harris Administration.
