If Trump inserts himself in this, he does so at his peril, especially with midterms approaching. It’s bad enough we’ll all be inundated with campaign ads at every clock stoppage for half the season.
I do confess that I am relishing in the blowback to the NFL’s naked embrace and marketing-weaponization of malignant patriotism over the last decade or so.
And that’s not a “hurr durr sportsball” comment. Sports are great. But the NBA isn’t having this problem. MLB isn’t having this problem. The NHL isn’t having this problem. College sports aren’t having this problem. Why? They didn’t wrap themselves in the flag and then light themselves on fire.
