I don’t meet your criterion but it strikes me it’s dumber than extortion, for which at least there’s a rationale. This is just a threat to hurt the company for acting in its own best interests. They can’t and won’t change their plans to suit his whims. This has obviously been in the works for years. Cutting subsidies won’t add one more job. It’s just vindictive vandalism.

And another thing, imagine the inattentive laziness it takes to be caught by surprise on this. That’s struck me. Was this a surprise through the entire executive branch? Do they not have a Commerce department that studies this stuff? Does word not filter out about a major factory closing? What’s being done in a non-stupid way to support domestic manufacturing? Fallows has been reporting for years now on resourceful economic development stuff happening at the community level. But since the federal government lobotomized itself two years ago, what positive action has happened? He’s done tariffs, because he’s nuts about trade. As an ill wind I’ve read it’s blown some good here and there, along with lots more pain. What else? Anything?

Trump and the GOP have done a real disservice to their supporters by failing to point this out and not supporting more education to prepare the work force for this outcome.

Typical of Trump’s ignorant and stupid logic. First he starts a trade war by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum. Then, in part owing to the increased production costs resulting from those tariffs, GM decides to cut production, layoff a major portion of its workers and close some plants. So then Trump threatens economic sanctions against GM which will only deepen their financial woes.
In the meantime all the people and businesses that supply goods & services to GM as well as those who sell food, household goods, meals and other services to the workers being laid off also suffer. All the result of the imbecilic impulses and stupid, ill-considered promises of a completely incompetent inexperienced 71 year-old “president.”
When will our fellow Americans who voted for this idiot wake-up?
