That’s one story about what happened. Another is that Dick Nixon won the election in the biggest landslide in history and then got himself into trouble. That gave the Democrats an opening, but we went with an outsider for obvious reasons at the time. Carter was too naive - he didn’t understand how to play politics and that’s just something that will never change - everyone and their dog has run on changing Washington and if it could be done, it would have happened by now. So Carter was wide open to be hacked to bits by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and secret deals in the Middle East because Jimmy didn’t see reality in politics.
And it hurt the Democrats badly - we got Reagan who really and truly did change the country by beginning the dismantling of our regulatory structure and protections.
