Discussion: Trump Tells Personal Accountant To Ignore Dem Subpoena For His Financial Info

These are hanging curve balls for the Dems to whack. Just do it.

The reality is that the accounting firm has no legal standing to oppose a subpeona. Only their client can. And their Client (Trump) has no legal ground to oppose a subpeona. Tax Forms are confidential by law (excepting that the house and senate tax comittee chair can get them) but other than that, the underlying work papers/accounts, etc, can be seen by Congress, and frankly can be released by congress if they want.

Yep. Start dropping subpoenas and let’s see who is actually willing to go jail for him or not, while the courts sort it out.

I would also like to see a constant thread pop in the media concerning Trump’s track record of cutting loose people who fall on the sword for him.

President Trump told his accountant to ignore a subpoena from House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) in a Monday letter, arguing the request is not “valid or enforceable.”

In the letter, Trump personal attorneys William Consovoy and Stefan Passantino also wrote that the firm is “on notice” regarding the request and signaled that they could take legal action to shield Trump’s financial information.

So when do Dems file contempt of Congress charges against Consovoy and Passantino for interfering with legitimate Congressional powers and impeachment proceedings against Trump?

Yep, it’s all starting to hit the fan. Very gratifying. Madam Speaker, if this is what you’re waiting for, then bravo to you.

Dear House Democrats: Please don’t be mean to Mr. Trump. We wouldn’t want to offend all those people who will never vote for us anyway.

Hey, AG Barr! Is the rule of law still a thing? If not, I guess all those NDAs Trump has handed out like candy are null and void.

But when the client has pardon power that he is perfectly willing to use indiscriminately to protect himself (and no one seems to be willing to challenge him on anything he does), why should they comply?

Not only predictable but predicted.

To all those who thought Trump would bend to the “Rule of Law”.

Here you go. Blatant Contempt of Congress as these are legal subpoenas that Trump has no standing to oppose.

He can oppose the release of his Taxes, but not the underlying paperwork used to prepare his taxes. The House has the black-letter-law legal right to ask for AND RECEIVE this paperwork.

File Contempt of Congress indictments against the accounting firm executives if they do not immediately turn over these documents, and file Obstruction charges against Trump himself.

I don’t see a way out, because, how many divisions does the House Ways & Means have? Trump is going to treat Congress in the same way Andrew Jackson treated the Supreme Court. Congress has no way on enforcing it’s requests. Democracy only works when the executive accepts limits to it’s power, Trump doesn’t and a sizable portion of the American population are fine with that.

Unless the GOP suddenly realizes that democracy is more important than holding into power, we are witnessing the beginning of the end of the american republic, we will go the way of Russia, Philippines, Venezuela & Turkey. #MAGA indeed!

“We ask that Mazars provide us with at least 10-days notice so that we may take appropriate legal steps to protect our clients’ rights,”

The letter adds that House Oversight is not a “miniature Department of Justice.”

I read this and heard Harry Carry in my head… “it might be…it could be…IT’S OUTTA HERE!”

We all keep assuming that Trump is going to such lengths to keep his tax returns secret because there’s all kinds of shenanigans in there, but in reality, it’s probably just because he doesn’t want people to know that he is not a billionaire, which unfortunately for us, is not an impeachable offense.

Really? A law firm is going to try to ignore a congressional subpoena? With the possibility of being hauled before Congress to testify under oath in public? LOL! OK. Sounds like great PR for your firm to me!

Though it would be so humiliating it would probably be worth it

Fatso Trump thinks he can tell the tide not to come in and it will obey. He is a mendacious fool.

Congress actually has the power to arrest and detain the accountant, and has had that power upheld by the Supreme Court. Would be an interesting legal question whether the pardon power extended to an act against the authority of congress vs the laws of the United States.

But to get there, Trump would actually have to use his pardon power, which he has not done so far (just dangled) mostly because he knows (or McConnell tells him) there would be a horrible backlash.
