I was sent to Vietnam and badly injured. I got out of the Army and after 2 years was back in great shape. In 1975 things sucked pretty bad so I went bank into the Army. Iād left as an Staff Sgt ( E 6 ) with a years combat experience and had acquired a degree in history while out ( Intellectual History: Europe 1870 to 1914 at a university in Munich ) so even though the Army was in post Vietnam stand down they wanted me. But Iād left an 11B. Recruiters told me that if I wanted an enlistment bonus and a return of previous rank and time in service Iād have to change my military occupational specialty. My AFQT scores were very high and I had a degree ( irrelevant as hell to anything the military needed ) they recommended 13E, an Artillery Fire Direction Specialist. I wanted to stay in the Combat Arms ( Infantry, Artillery, Armor and Combat Engineers ) as thatās where the rank is so I said OK. I declined a Commission as I did not want to stay in for life . I got a VRB or Variable Reenlistment Bonus of 12 K ( it was 1975 ) for a 4 year stint. As an Infantryman Iād get nothing.
huh? The reason was explained. Infantry are fodder. No problem filling those slots as all the dummies go there. You need a jobā¦the Infantry is waiting. The Army doesnāt give a shit about that fodder. Cash bonus are for the folks the Army gives a shit about. The Infantry, the heart of the American Military, isnāt on the list. The folks that die the mostā¦get wounded the most and suffer far and away the most readjustment and mental heath problemsā¦are not on the list.
