German born, naturalized US Citizen, Peter Thiel, entrepeneur, PayPal cofounder and a big supporter of the current POTUS, obtained, in secrecy and under a āunusual circumstancesā-clause, a New Zealand citizenship in 2011, so he currently hold a dual US-NZ citizenship. (āYou canāt be too slim or have too many passportsā).
In a letter accompanying his application to Nathan Guy, then minister for internal affairs, Mr Thiel wrote that it would give him āgreat prideā to let it be known that he is a New Zealand citizen and an enthusiastic supporter of the country and its emerging high-tech industry. He has been awfully quiet about this, though, modesty perhaps ?
This came to light last month, when he bought property in a sensitive area in NZ, which normally requires a special permission for foreigners to buy. It has raised a stink in NZ now.
