This one puzzled me initially because 1 year ago, Trump taped a video praising Pakistanis as ‘great people’. Then I read up a little bit on the new Prime Minister Abbasi and it became a little clearer. Abbasi took over by an election of the Pakistan National Assembly after Nawaz Sharif was forced to resign on corruption charges. He’s a Sharif loyalist but appears to be one of the few who did not grift during Sharif’s various stints in power. From what I can tell, Abbasi is trying to actually govern and not bilk the treasury. That probably means he’s not that interested in playing parlor games with the US in the geopolitical sphere nor is he too desirous of giving Trump affiliated businesses any special treatment.
Pakistan harbored Ossama bin Laden, and we went in unannounced and uninvited and shot him in his house. Pakistan clearly disrespect us before that, and resented us afterward.
Now they likely think DJT is a clown. DJT would not know real respect if it were labeled Respect, and handed to him.
Trump properties are getting the royal treatment in India. I wouldn’t be surprised if his Indian partners had his ear.

That’s more or less my thinking too. This came after his stay in Mar-e-Largo, where lots of people have much easier access to him, and what passes as his brain, is presented with more Trump Org/money triggers.
There is almost certainly a grift angle on this at play.
Our relationship with Pakistan is far removed from perfect. Pakistani intelligence helped install the Taliban, and continue to provide them with arms and IEDs. There is no doubt they knew perfectly well where bin Laden was staying (right down the street from their national military academy!!) We knew that back in W’s days, and certainly knew it during Obama’s terms.
But as long as we are in Afghanistan, we do not want it to devolve into a complete adversarial relationship. Our logistics tail runs through them.
Pakistan is not only a nuclear power, they are a nuclear power without a stringent, centralized control over their nuclear arsenal. This is NOT a country that we want to see destabilize.
