Discussion: Trump Signs Exec Order Mandating Work Requirements For Welfare Programs

Can they golf most of the time, tho?

Wonder if work requirements apply to ‘elected’ officials who spend all their time watching TV and toilet-tweeting…

I know that TPM is in something of a bind here, but we get nothing useful from TPM merely copying a useless AP article. No president - including Trump - can invent criteria for the receipt of government aid. Those standards are set out in the law. Now, if TPM wanted to do something useful on this issue - which I think would be great - it would carefully read the so-called Executive Order and describe anything in it that actually purports to change the current rules, and then compare these changes with the statutory language. It would then explore how this nothing-burger of an Order is nothing more than more grist for his ignorant base.

Does this apply to all welfare recipients, or just the ones with a darker-hued skin? Not that Trump would think there are any other kind.

Good! This will help Dems in Kentucky replace some Reps. The rural folks down state are already bitching about the Gov doing this and just after they had a taste of what decent health is like.

“I know people that work three jobs and they live next to somebody who doesn’t work at all. And the person who is not working at all and has no intention of working at all is making more money and doing better than the person that’s working his and her ass off,” Trump said in November.

The only person he knows who has three jobs is Kushner, and he doesn’t work at any of them.

The person raking in more money from public assistance than a neighbor with three jobs is earning is a GOP unicorn. Still, it makes a good case for increasing the minimum wage.

Signed in “private” sez it all…especially from a guy was born into wealth and who the country has witnesses his contempt for the lower class working poor…remember him throwing things at the hurricane victims and telling them to have “fun” with the free stuff on his visit to the ravaged sectors of NO?

So were enslaving people to work in their current jobs instead of offering some kind of training or encouragement to possibly attend college or career enhancing training. This hits the uneducated, single skilled trump voter the worse.
For a guy who was born into wealth

He does realize most folks on welfare are probably disabled right…jk, Donald doesn’t realize anything, ha ha!

So basically another big fat nothing of an “I order the cabinet to look at ways to increase cruelty” and report back to me" order portrayed as a mandate by the ever credulous and normalizing AP? Am I missing something?

He seems nice about it. lol

Uh yeah, this one is headed for court too I suspect. Can’t change the law with the stroke of a pen. I’m pretty sure some things can’t be done by executive fiat. This shit won’t go unchallenged. Just like his Muslim Ban, some things stand out as crossing the line.

Yes, “welfare to work” makes for a nice snappy soundbite.

But meanwhile…

No real plan to implement an infrastructure program that could create a million jobs, no emphasis on training people for emerging industries such as renewable energy, no push to expand Medicaid (In Louisiana, the Medicaid expansion has resulted in the creation of 19,000 jobs already), nothing in the recent tax cut legislation to encourage investment into job creation, etc.

Nothing but dog whistles that reinforce bigoted stereotypes.

Just dog-whistles to his base, who are full of baseless, directionless resentment. People on SNAP who are not the children or the elderly, already work. This, however, will require an additional bureaucracy in order to keep records of people’s work.

he doesn’t know anyone who works. He’s making that up.

He’s on a cruelty streak…Might have something to do with how unhinged, enraged and insanely freaked-out he is about Mueller looking into Deutsche bank, and what they’ll find in Michael Cohen’s ephemera, file cabinets, LLCs, offshore accounts, emails, phone contacts and internet history.

Lashing out in this vindictive way towards people who have less means to fight back is his way of making himself happier. He’s basically a sadist at heart. Its easy to make victims of people that have already been victimized plenty in life than to take on a strong opponent. tRump wouldn’t survive first contact if he tried that instead. Notice he hasn’t gone after the billionaire that has regularly run ads calling for his impeachment. That’s because he’s no match for a real billionaire.

Ask the trump voter working the grave yard shift @ the circle K six days a week if they rather have limitations on their SNAP benefits to feed their 5 kids or participate in a WPA program that trains them the skills to work on federally funded infrastructure projects around the country with te possibility of a permanent career in construction…

I know people that work three jobs and they live next to somebody who doesn’t work at all.

So you’re admitting the people who work for you are forced to live in public assistance housing, and now you need more room for your own corporate serfs and don’t want to pay to construct additional low-income housing.

You’re assuming the point is to actually get more people engaged in the workforce and not to simply cut public benefits. Your job training and public infrastructure suggestions are excellent examples of public benefits, a la F.D. Roosevelt. The Republicans have been in control of Congress for eight years now and can’t agree with themselves long enough to pass a decent infrastructure bill, no matter who’s President.

This should be called the “make it easier for bad Walmart managers to harass and threaten poor employees dependent of their job” act. It’s amazing what one can get away with when dealing with an employee who literally could lose everything by reporting abuse.

So all the executive agencies have 90 days to figure out how to injure more of the people they’re supposed to serve. Whee.

I hope TPM keeps an eye on this one, because there will be some doozies coming out, and taking all of the different regs to court will be a long, costly pain. (And this is also why the judiciary is so important.)
