Discussion: Trump Says He's Not 'Morally Obligated' To Defend Obama

Discussion for article #240736

Most of Trump’s supporters – most of the very large base of the GOP – agrees with the man. Why on earth would Trump not avail himself of an opportunity to silently affirm that belief?

(Also: Is it logical to use “moral” and “Trump” in the same sentence without prefixing the former with a very big “im”?)

This is NOT news! We already knew that Donald and most of his supporters were immoral!!

If someone made a nasty or controversial statement about me to the president, do you really think he would come to my rescue? No chance! - D. Trump

Watch “no f#cks left to give” Obama do just that! Just for kicks.

“If I would have challenged the man, the media would have accused me of interfering with that man’s right of free speech. A no win situation!” D- Trump

Well, have to admit he probably has a point there, but it would just be Fox & Friends and the rabid right doing that and not all media as shown by media talking about this the last few days in pretty much agreement that he should have pulled a John McCain on the guy in question.

From a media handling perspective, this is not good.

He skipped the Heritage forum last night, largely to avoid having to actually talk to the media about this situation, and instead retreats back behind his one way twitter feed.

That’s not going to fly as an approach going forward. He will eventually have to face the press, and they will be even more dogged about this situation precisely because he is hiding now. Throwing chum into the water to get the shark’s attention is fine and dandy when you just want their attention. Its not such a wise strategy when you have to actually climb into the water with them.

I suppose that when you demonstrate that you have no morals that you aren’t morally obligated to do anything…

as a ‘businessman’ Donnie Dipstick also believes in ‘let the buyer beware’ as a philosophy…

also never give a sucker an even break…

Probably  I like the no F*cks to give Obama a LOT.

But I think Obama would stand up and correct against something as outrageous as this guys comments were. That’s just the way he is.

And nobody would have accused Trump of violating the guys’s 1st Amendment rights; certainly not Fox who is scared to death of getting into another scrape with Trump. That’s just Trump making up something to play victim.

And make no mistake about it; Mr. Tough Guy is crying us a river and playing victim here.

The Donald has tweeted and, guess what, he’s both innocent and, drum roll please, the victim!
Will Donald be morally obligated to defend Ivanka when his supporters want to gas her and her Jewish family?

¨Moral obligation" and ¨Donald Trump¨ go together like oil and water.

“The bigger issue is that Obama is waging war against Christians in this country. Their religious liberty is at stake,” Trump said in the statement."

So my religious liberty and the liberty of 60 million Catholics here in the U. S. of A. is at stake?
Where does this fool come up with this shit.

And then there’s the classic conflating of the president being an immigrant 'cause he ain’t no 'Murican and as a result of this status, it’s assumed he must be a rapist and a drug dealer as well.

Hillary, Bernie, are you listening? Opportunity is knocking.

“You don’t hit a person on faith,” Trump told hundreds of people at a rally in Boone.

Maybe it’s not a question of how long it’ll be before he loses support. Maybe it’s more a question of how soon this spoiled child’s head explodes because he never could handle any amount or form of criticism. He’ll take his ball and stomp off the field, saying he could have saved the country but all the haters and losers were mean to him so now he won’t so there.

It isn’t a matter of sticking up for or defending the president. It’s a question of whether you are comfortable with the perpetuation of lies and disinformation. If you are, you aren’t fit for high office.

It makes no sense for him to antagonize his supporters. Gov. Chrisp Chrispy and Ms. Lindsey Graham are attacking him because they have less than 1% of the conservative vote, have terrible self esteem and are heading toward the dustbin of history.

Right. From a philosophical point of view, it’s true he’s not morally obligated to defend the President from “bad or controversial” statements. He is, or should be, though, obligated to rebut clearly erroneous statements.

I disagree. I think he skipped the Heritage forum to let the field develop and decide how to proceed. If he made a mistake (after not saying anything to town hall bigot) it was defending his actions to the Washington Post so quickly. The media wasn’t making the issue about Obama, the politicians were.

Now he’s framed this “he’s not morally obligated to defend Obama” in a way to put the other GOP candidates, at least the one’s who spoke out about this, in a pickle.

“Mr. Trump in many ways is responsible for this, by creating this idea that maybe Obama was born in Kenya…He’s playing into this hateful narrative. It’s now time for him to set it right.”

Despite his rugged, manly ways, I always had Lindsey Graham pegged as a “romantic” at heart.

Since I feel Donald’s campaign had its birth in the humiliation Trump felt at that WHCA dinner as Mr. Obama mocked him, I’m doubtful he’ll just exit the scene. Even if he tried would the media allow it?
Donald will stay a noisy game player or become a noisy sideline heckler and the toast of the cable yak shows.
In these new tweets, Donald’s tolerance for and flirtation with winger nuts and Friday’s 2nd amendment policy show the calculation of a man at least superficially aware of what he is doing…but, I doubt he realizes the danger he’s bringing to his beloved daughter’s family.
