Discussion: Trump Says He Will Renegotiate NAFTA, Not Terminate Trade Deal

Every day a “new” policy from these nitwits.

Geez, here we are again. Breast-beating, arm-waving, strutting, posturing, me-me-me-ing followed almost immediately by back-down.

Doh-see-doh and away we go, on another trip on theTrumpian merry-go-round.

I am really, really tired of winning.

Yes, of course - the renegotiation of NAFTA is how he will try to make it appear that Mexico is paying for the wall. In some form, at some later date, over some period of time. Or, maybe Canada will help pay for the wall. Many, many details to follow. Believe me.

Good point. Hadn’t thought about it that way, but is certainly plausible.

What the protectionists (including those on the left) don’t get is that the beneficiaries of trade protectionism are tiny in number and the rest of us pay the costs. Like the softwood lumber duties on Canadian exports-the number of jobs in forestry and lumber mills that will be saved number in the several thousand perhaps; meanwhile millions of homebuyers will pay $1,000 more for a house. It would be much better to simply provide generous adjustment payments to those who have lost jobs and move on.

It’s plausible (even likely) that he will lie about everything.

News Flash! Queen Elizabeth has authorized the May to renegotiate the Treaty of Ghent. “All options are on the table,” said the Queen.

Also this is really, really worth reading. Kinda scary, but definitely insightful.

Ha ha… I have referred to area “first daughters” a few times.
Happy ending to that story is that as far as I know, Karimov’s daughter has no political power in the new government. Actually, I should check on that—I’ve heard that the new President is an improvement. This wouldn’t be hard, although Karimov was more popular than Trump (really) with his people.

Isn’t this the same guy who can’t negotiate an American bank loan?

Trump and his supporters are victims of a pretty common problem of modern political discourse. Problems are never reexamined. NAFTA had real problems 20 years ago. Behind the scenes people worked the problems and things changed. Nobody told the right wing pundit class who is still invested in the initial outrage. Along comes Trump and he has to fix a problem that was fixed 10-15 years ago to prove he da man.

Yesterday he got on the phone with his Mexican and Canadian counterparts and discovered the big problems had been worked and NAFTA has been very successful. Now he is going to negotiate tweeks. The pundits and their followers are left in outraged ignorance.

Trump should probably read the agreement before trying to renegotiate it. I know that will be a first for him, but still…

So in other words nothing is going to happen. Man all this winning is exhausting.

If Le Pen wins the Entente Cordiale may be in jeopardy! :anguished:

"Renegotiate on Trump’s terms means threats and accusations, and blustering and lies. I don’t think Mexico and Canada are going to be impressed.

It takes at least two to negotiate anything. If either or both countries tells him to go get bent, things go nowhere. Along with the wall.

I think it’s cute when one of the most ignorant, dull-witted sons of bitches ever to lumber through the public awareness thinks he’s better than anyone alive at seeing problems in, and solutions for, mind-crackingly complex trade agreements hammered out by large teams of economists and diplomats over months and years.

And by cute I mean sickening. Work for the Democrats. Nothing else will save us.
