Discussion: Trump Says He Didn't Personally Ask Kasich To Be His Running Mate

This is the classic non-denial admission.

Yah…no one says your did so Cheeto Jeebus. All reports have it that your son, Donnie Jr. did this at your behest.

John Kasich was never asked by me to be V.P. Just arrived in Cleveland - will be a great two days!

Yo Donnie, only losers use the passive voice. Sad!

No, that was jr.'s job!

Very late in the game, DJ Trump trying to add a little finesse to his mendacity. It’s almost cute, like watching your grandfather try to figure out his smart phone.

Sorry, until Manafort speaks on the matter, I won’t know what to believe. Once he gives a position, I’ll know the truth.

No, he didn’t get the new Cadillac, but he did get the steak knives.

Of course Trump didn’t ask Kasich personally; he’s already made it clear that he’s a “hands-off” kind of leader.

Personal interaction is beneath him; that’s the sort of thing that minions are for.

Well, probably more importantly, Trump isn’t going to ask someone until he is sure they were going to say yes. And Kasich was a long shot by any stretch of the imagination.

…as well as lovely parting gift - a copy of “Trump: The Game” that he can play at home.

Gov Kasich: please step up now and either confirm or deny what if anything you discussed with Don Boy. It is your patriotic duty. And if your statement violates a non-disclosure agreement, I am sure millions of grateful Anericans will donate generously to your legal defense fund.

There’s an interesting possibility which I don’t think I’ve seen mentioned yet. Maybe Trump didn’t approve or even know of the offer to Kasich. It’s pretty obvious that Pence was forced on him, grudgingly. Maybe the alternatives to Gingrich, Carson and Christie were vetted separately.

There you go again!

Remember, Barack Obama is a lawyer. Michelle Obama is a lawyer.

Donald J. Trump is not a lawyer.

Kasich was asked…that is all that matters.

What I find telling, though, is that Trump Sr. did not have the class or balls to ask Kasich personally. Perhaps he was expecting to be turned down, and not wanting to face the turn down, or show any kind of “weakness” by trying to appeal to Kasich to join him, he decided to send his son.

I would hazard a guess and say that Trump does not like get an answer of “no” to his face.

Wonder if the Donald expected this story to be released to the press?

According to NY Times story cited by @sooner above, it’s much worse than you suggest. Kasich told Dishonest Don in May that a joint ticket would be like trying to merge two corporations with “completely different philosophies and styles”. On 4 July, one of Kasich’s people (Weaver) called Manafort and told him there would be no endorsement coming before the convention.

If you consider what Dishonest Don has done with regard to Kasich since then, it’s quite clear that Drumpf is perhaps unrivalled in the ability to burn bridges. This isn’t the first time it happened in this campaign either: he went after Susana Martinez in Albuquerque after she didn’t respond to Lewandowski’s calls about the veep slot.
