Discussion: Trump’s Cloud Of Legal Woes Will Hang Over Midterm Elections

Legal experts tell TPM there’s no practical reason for any of those matters to be resolved before the midterms.

Shouldn’t this be “not to be resolved”?

Your honor, my client finds these charges very embarrassing. Therefore, we demand an immediate directed verdict of “not guilty.”

The President Has No Power to Delay, Change Election Date

29 Oct 2012

During a White House press conference this morning, Jay Carney was asked whether President Obama has the power to delay Election Day because of the impact of hurricane Sandy.
Carney’s answer: “I don’t know.”

A Constitutional answer: “Hell no.”

The Constitution gives Congress sole power regarding the date of the presidential election, and that date is binding on the entire country.

Thanks for covering that point, Breitbart, in case there is any future question.

That damn “foundation” accomplished about as much charitable giving as a whorehouse piano player’s tip jar. Let the voters see what you are, you chiseling punk.

Your honor, my client is a corrupt, self-serving son-of-a-bitch. We’d rather the voters not be thinking about that fact on election day…

I think Russian “contributions” to the 2016 election campaigns of GOP congresscritters might be highly relevant to the 2018 elections.
Come on, Mueller, let’s go.

Hmmm… “Cloud of Legal Woes” hanging over Mr. Trump and his party as the election approaches.

How to describe that “cloud”? Who has a thesaurus handy?

Would you call it a “stench”? Or is “miasma” a better image?

Why would circumstances or election dates interfere with the courts proceeding to try these pending cases…what is the downside for America in understanding the depths of malfeasance this maniac has created?

'Longstanding Justice Department policy prohibits investigative steps that might influence an upcoming election, as Mueller is well aware."
Yes, but hasn’t the precedent now been set by Comey that interference is OK.

Malodorous for a maladministration?

Though Judge Scarpulla reportedly urged a lawyer for the Trump’s three eldest children, who are also defendants in the suit, to settle out of court at this week’s proceeding, the President has insisted via tweet that he “won’t settle this case!”

It sounds like the defendants want this thing to drag out. My guess is that this is one of the techniques that the family uses to dissuade other plaintiffs such as contractors who believe they should be paid for the services they have provided. Perhaps we need to remember that court dockets are also busy, and should schedule it on a schedule that would be expected of any other defendant or plaintiff.

Trump has made the opposite case.

No, Ms. Kirkland. He may be flapping his gums but he has not made any case, except possibly for his own impeachment.

Oh those poor candidates that campaign on their unwavering love and admiration for 45 may have to rethink that strategy. Or 30% will just look for the “R” and check that box.

and then there’s THIS…

Add to all this, the attempted browbeating of Rosenstein by Jordan was an open act of obstruction.

The video of it will be admissible in court someday, just like Trump’s plea to Russia to steal Hillary’s emails.

We need to subpoena the cell-phone records and emails of EVERY Freedom Caucus staffer.

That would PROVE there’s a Congressional Conspiracy to Obstruct the Investigation Into the Cover-up of Russian Collusion. I still think they all took Russian bribes or promises, that is the only thing that explains their desperation.

Special Thanks to Jim Jordan for pointing the way.

Looking to November, Trump and his legal woes are not on the ballot. But new details in all of these cases will be spilling out in the coming months, providing fodder for Democrats eager to paint the entire GOP as hopelessly in thrall to a corrupt leader with no regard for the rule of law.

We can only hope so . . .
