I am imagining, with good reason, that Trump, in a fit of pique upon learning that his vote doesn’t count any more than any other’s vote, withdraws the United States from the G7.
Now that I’m thinking on it, this might actually be the strategy.

87% of Republicans are good with sexual assault, insults, infidelity, probable illegal activities and an unhealthy admiration of foreign dictators. Rohrabacher in California just won his primary, even though the FBI warned him years ago his infatuation with Russia made him a target of Russian security services’ efforts to ‘turn’ him.
But this also OK in the GOP.

Trump is acting like he has some kind of big bucks deal in the offing with Putin, where big = really big. Presumably what he most admires about his strong men is the klepto- part, which has the promise of delivering his life-long, never-quite-achieved goal. From his current perch, he could aim for not just billions but scores or maybe hundreds of billions.
So what’s the deal? That seems like the right question to ask. My guess, looking at the scattered pieces lying about, is something to do with oil. Other conjectures are welcome.

I feel if the Republicans in Congress do not aggressively attack that statement, this will be remembered as the successful test signal that made clear the intent to destroy our democracy.

Trump is just trolling. Russia is moving towards a trade association and alliance with China (mainly as a response to continuing sanctions) and is making it pretty clear rejoining is not a priority for them unless it includes full restoration of membership and termination of all sanctions including those imposed on individual oligarchs.
They might send someone to G7 if invited but that would be mainly to join Trump in trolling; there will be no serious discussions otherwise.

What is the optimal strategy for Putin if dominance over Europe is the goal? Splitting NATO and fostering divergence of USA interests from those of Europe. An alternative to NATO and G7 in the meantime would be useful.
