Discussion: Trump Responds To Istanbul Suicide Bombings With New Calls For Torture

Propaganda works better when the language is very simple and ideas are repetitive.
1. Keep the dogma simple. Make only 1 or 2 points.
 2. Be forthright and powerfully direct. Speak only in the telling or ordering mode.
 3. As much as possible, reduce concepts down into stereotypes which are black and white.
 4. Speak to people’s emotions and stir them constantly.
 5. Use lots of repetition; repeat your points over and over again.
 6. Forget literary beauty, scientific reasoning, balance, or novelty.
 7. Focus solely on convincing people and creating zealots.
 8. Find slogans which can be used to drive the movement forward.
Did Dwight Eisenhower say “The Nazis have a Gestapo so we must have one too”?

Maybe it’s time to revisit a 1967’s classic?
There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it’s time we stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

There’s battle lines being drawn
Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

It’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It’s s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, hey, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, now, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down
Stop, children, what’s that sound
Everybody look what’s going down

This “eye for an eye” approach will backfire. We are already bombing non-stop. Still don’t think Americans want to sent thousands of soldiers to die in the Middle East.

Interesting. As I’m sure you know, Trump was supposed to have kept a copy of Mein Kampf (or possibly some other collection of speeches) by his bed in the '90s. So there could be a method to the stupidity. Or more likely it’s just stupidity naturally expressing itself.

Compare that to the letter Ms. McGarry sent to Dimwit Donald Jr. telling him to stop spamming her with fundraising spam.

Trump: Make America Drown People in Steel Cages Again (guess it won’t fit on a hat, but maybe he can get some T-shirts made on the cheap in China?)

First, you’re correct of course. But the problem is, 1) Trump either doesn’t understand this, or doesn’t care; but more importantly 2) the American people probably don’t understand this.

I was going to say Trump voters don’t understand, but it is very clear from at least the last decade of Presidential elections that the American people far overestimate the powers of the presidency. They didn’t understand that Pres. Obama couldn’t magically make everything perfect and pass his entire agenda in six months, they didn’t understand that almost nothing of what Bernie Sanders was proposing could be done by the President, and they don’t understand that everything that Donald Trump proposes is not within his powers. Not only that, they don’t understand that 99% of the crap Trump proposes would never even get passed by a fully GOP Congress! The GOP will never spend +50 billion on wall, or $500 billion to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, or allow torture, etc.

But the problem is what he would do within his executive powers. Both Pres. Bush and Pres. Obama have expanded Presidential powers. This may just be the natural inclination of the executive, but it is more likely due to the intransigence in Congress. Each side is so tribal and so partisan and polarized that they can’t get anything done through legislation. So if we give this guy the Presidency, how much would he do with executive powers? How many law suits would need to be filed to stop him? How many loyalists would he put in place that could do damage before we even found out? How much would be hidden from the public in the name of “national security”?

He wants to fight fire with fire? He wants to torture? To kill terrorists families? At what point will the people of this country stop thinking he’s just saying this stuff and trust that he means what he says. If Sec. Clinton said any of this shit her career would be over.

After the battle of Trenton, New Jersey on December 26, 1776, George Washington issued an order to his troops regarding prisoners of war:

"Treat them with humanity, and let them have no reason to complain of our copying the brutal example of the British Army in their treatment of our unfortunate brethren who have fallen into their hands."

And this:

“Should any American soldier be so base and infamous as to injure any [prisoner]. . . I do most earnestly enjoin you to bring him to such severe and exemplary punishment as the enormity of the crime may require. Should it extend to death itself, it will not be disproportional to its guilt at such a time and in such a cause… for by such conduct they bring shame, disgrace and ruin to themselves and their country.” – George Washington, charge to the Northern Expeditionary Force, Sept. 14, 1775

Wouldn’t you love to give those quotes to a Republican today (Just remember how much they LOVE the ‘founding fathers’!) and not tell him whose words they are, and ask for his critique?

No, but then he had a campaign to retake Europe to carry out. Neither Roosevelt nor Truman said it either, so I take your point.

@sherlock1 I don’t think Drumpf could even read those remarks from a teleprompter without stumbling - some pretty long words in there: “What the hell is this loser trying to say? Just sad! Sad.”

So trump is jealous of terrorists and wants to act like them?
I still think he’s doing this as a joke I can’t believe this guy is for real

Half the populace probably still believes the Sun revolves around the Earth. Trump knows this. Whatever level of stupidity you suspect exists in our citizenry you could probably treble and still be off by a factor of ten.
