The age of trump and his supporters are also a major difference. Hitler was a much younger man and many of his supporters were young veterans of World War 1 angry with the status of post-war Germany and its people.
Although his rally attendees tend to be (relatively) younger, trump gets much of his support from men of his generation: Rupert Murdoch, the Kochs, and the Mercers are all over 70 - and so is much of the Fox demographic.

I think ultimately the lesson from history is that even mature democracies can shuttle back and forth on a continuum from authoritarianism to more traditional liberal democracy as a model. It’s not by any means inevitable that we’ll do what Germany did, no matter how many similarities a person could list. But neither does that mean we don’t have a problem. There’s certainly an authoritarian playbook, but Trump’s too lazy to look in it. He’s an instinctive authoritarian. Others around him are more sinister than that, but he stirs up enough chaos that we can slow it to a stop we hope if we can…

They really do not feel like doing so and that is an issue. Leaving the authoritarian animal free leaves open authoritarian possibilities. Their chances are slim, but there should not be any at all.

Yeah I know that. My point is that the industrialists and so forth in Germany thought they could control Hitler, only to find they couldn’t. Trump is far more tractable, so that’s a difference I’m pointing out. I said repeatedly the situation is dangerous.
