Their eyes are on the football. They only care about cutting taxes for very-high-income people… everything else is a distraction.
And anyway they’re in a bind. If they throw him in front of the bus too soon then they risk losing the hardcore angry-bigot/asshole constituency that he cultivated. They need those people going forward to stay in power so they’ll have to wait til the last possible moment.

Well, you pretty much nailed it.
Here’s what’s left as I see it. Either some sufficient quantum of republicans – in Congress, on the bench, and in the military – come to their senses and (with the democrats) remove him from office in some legal manner, or the rest of us have to do so, through mass protests the like of which I do not recall seeing in this country during my life time.
