(Did you all see the full page ad in the NYT today listing the amounts each representative or senator has taken from the NRA? Several of them have literally taken millions of dollars, millions! No wonder they vote to keep the gun mongers in power.)

High schools (and I assume middle schools) are gossip central. As soon as some teachers are tasked with carrying firearms, they become a bigger target. Students would decide, based on actual facts or not, who the armed teachers were. Assuming that the shooter has ties to the school (and except for Sandy Hook, I think they did), those teachers would be picked off immediately, leaving the students no better off than they are now.
That said, it is my guess that there are already teachers in some high schools who are armed. These folks may or may not be able to respond appropriately. They may be in greater danger, should the SWAT team see them with a firearm. How would a SWAT team know who was a “good guy with a gun” and who was a “bad guy with a gun”?
And by the way, Mr. President. Teachers are already professionals. Professional educators. They are already tasked with making hundreds of decisions an hour. Thanks for suggesting that we make it worse.

Again I want to understand who these people are in Trump’s mind (such as it is). He’s just gotten done saying you can’t have a bunch of armed security guards. So are these supposed to be the teachers–the hoards of ex-marines who go into teaching? Who are they?

It would still be in his locker and he would have still been shot. The damn thing doesn’t magically appear when you need it. And again, all the extra training we’d be demanding of our teaching staff.
You know I’ve read statement from police about active shooting and they say the training they receive is sometimes not enough to prepare you for the first time you’re in that kind of situation.

Just one other obvious counter to this nonsense, specifically Trump’s suggestion that armed teachers would be a deterrent. The deterrent value is nonexistent for these deranged mass murderers who want to act on their grievances and then go out with a bang. Just look at how often the run of carnage ends with a self-inflicted wound. Knowing they might be gunned down at the scene by a teacher or security guard probably wouldn’t enter into their decision making, and even if it did, who knows if they might see it as a positive rather than a negative.

As I was reading the quote, I was thinking something like “if you put chairs on the sidewalk on one side and planters on the other side”, that could solve your problem with too much traffic coming to your building at one time. I’d type “JFC” despite my lapsed Catholic self, but I’ve got nothing for this.
Those poor people who actually thought they were going to be listened to and treated with respect. I am so ashamed to be an American right now that I’m glad my father–who was the same age as Billy Graham–is not here to see this horror.
