Yeah, his staff tried to do it in cartoon form, but it was too difficult.
So they just put a picture of him with a crown on his head and he was agreeably diverted by it for a couple of hours, no firings during that time.

Yes, itās like the intensity of the protests against the Vietnam War. Like most of the war protesters, the high school kids now have a vested interest in not becoming targets. While the end of the draft took the intensity out of war protesters who didnāt want to get their asses shot off in Southeast Asia, the high school kids donāt want to get their asses shot off in their classrooms. There is nothing like the imminent threat of having your ass shot off to evoke intensity.

The Constitution of the United States was designed to protect the power of wealthy white male property owners, and it has been fulfilling that mission very well.
The Second Amendment was an important part of that because it guaranteed to right of slave owners to form armed militias to stop slave insurrections.
We need a new Constitution that supports a true democracy, not the fake democracy that we have now.

Itās significant that Trump had to even say this. The fact that the conversation includes the repeal of the Second Amendment seems like a big shift.

I know a guy who worked for Colt, right out of engineering school. He quit after a year because it was clear that handguns were designed to be 1) very deadly and 2) easy to conceal. That was hard to deal with day after day.

Stevens was nominated to the Federal bench by a Republican president, and then to the Supreme Court by another Republican president.
Trump and others should never be allowed to forget these simple facts.

Agree. Someone mentioned the Overton window upthread and I think itās relevant here. What those Parkland kids did is show the majority that it does, in fact, have the power to make change happen if it stays focused and demands that change. Weād psychologically defeated ourselves after seeing the fecklessness and moral cowardice of too many legislators and the vicious, amoral venality of too many others. Itās like Joe Hill said, weāve stopped mourning and started organizing.

Even if repeal is not in the cards, itās a good thing Justice Stevens came out and said what he said. Democrats, if they are smart, will point to his words as setting out one end of the spectrum of options, with the Republicans and the NRA at the other end.

Right ā> It is a two edged sword. The Republican echo machine equated common sense gun control with the repeal of the 2nd amendment, which no one ever said, until now. Now there can be that needed middle ground. And maybe the discussion can become reasonable. (always hoping and optimistic).

In his book, Justice John Paul Stevens suggest a modest tweak to the Second Amendment to finally make clear what the founders obviously intended:
āA well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the Militia shall not be infringed.ā
Letās see ā Prohibition was repealed, so it is possible.
Maybe we can force the Republicans into more precise language. Everyone is Pro-life ā just that some people want to give women reproductive rights and are pro-choice. How on earth someone came up with the idea that anyone is anti-life is one of those framing issues that Republicans are so good at. And their care and concern for that life ends when they become anti-education, and all the other āwelfareā programs for the well being of children.
But you already knew all this

The odds of repealing the 2nd Amendment just jumped from close to 0% to something higher.
The US introduces new amendments, including amendments to repeal amendments, about every 8 years so the timing is not bad. There is also similar pressure to repeal birthright citizenship under the 14th amendment. In both cases, the new amendment would replace the repealed amendment, although in the 21st it didnāt really add much new information.

Retired Supreme Justice John Paul Stevens was the one who made the case for repeal yesterday. John Paul Stevens is a fine legal mind and a highly respected person, which is something the Asshole in Chief will never be.

Everybody agrees Congress needs to be flushed, but folks tend to think their particular representatives are ok, and so Congressional zombies just keep coming back to eat our brains. Along comes a wave of shiny new voters who have every reason to vote out those NRA āA ratedā incumbents. Scales tip. The pendulum swings. The nice part is they do not have to face jail and angry cops; just vote. Nice.

Something like six amendments have never been ratified. One would expect South Carolina to drag its feet on this one, too.

The Left should avoid taking the bait of repealing the Second Amendment. Because once amendments are in play, the First would be the first to go. And itās not like the Second Amendment actually stands in the way of gun control. Itās established law that there are limits and exceptions to rights. And thereās nothing in the Constitution that says the CDC canāt study gun violence. The obstacles to gun control are stubbornness, rhetoric and lack of political courage, not the Constitution.
