Trump is the kind of sap that casinos love to see come through their doors. He’s down $250, he bets $500. He’s $500 in the hole, he goes all in for $1000. He’s staring at a minus $1000, he blusters $5000. Pretty soon he’s lost his Rolex, his kid’s college fund, and he’s thinking about selling his wife’s jewelry. And all because he can’t bear to admit to himself that he’s been holding a losing hand all evening. All he knows how to do is double down, regardless of the circumstances.
The sinking ship is the GOP’s already slim chances of winning in 2016. The more he opens his mouth and spouts this stuff, and the more that the GOP leadership remains to limp-wristed to actually forcefully challenge him to cut it out, the more that their chances sink lower and lower.
Ms. Krueger, how about applying a little “decency in reporting” standards? Trump is a jerk, but his comment about Bush’s wife is NOT “racially tinged.” “Racially tinged” is, at least in this case, a phrase used by sloppy reporters trying to create some excitement and controversy where none exists. Mr. Trump’s remarks about Bush’s wife are pure politics and have no derogatory component despite your efforts to cast aspersions on the comment and the speaker. TPM normally has higher standards than this, I hope you can clean up your act a bit.
Then he declares bankruptcy, leaves his creditors hanging, borrows against all the assets he put in his wife’s name, talks a bunch of suckers into developing another cheesy luxury golf course spa hotel resort, slaps his name on it, sells it for hundreds of millions and then writes a book. The Art of,the Dump.
Trump said the buck “absolutely” stops with him and that he “can’t
guarantee” all workers on his projects have legal immigration status.
If he can’t make that guarantee, then no, the buck does not stop with him. He might as well just come out and say, “I want all of the credit and none of the blame.”
The voters are supposed to supply the quality control. The GOTP made the mistake of developing a base of riled up extremists and now finds that those people are in control and make up the majority of those likely to vote in the primaries. This is the result.
Back in 2004 Sharpton and Kucinich were in the primaries hovering in the low single digits. However neither said anything as remotely bizarre and offensive as Trump. To be as bizarre as Trump in 2004 or 08 a Democratic primary candidate would have to go full-on 9/11 Truther.
People like Lyndon LaRouche (and many of his followers) and David Duke have frequently run as Democrats. Some LaRoucheites have even won primaries, usually by concealing their beliefs. And don’t forget Alvin Greene just a few years ago:
I think so, it’s sort of an interweaved combover/combforward. If you see a picture of him in a breeze you can see the hair in the back is about a foot long.
Do any GOP candidates have the guts to call him out? I hope so, because the base would likely attack him/her with all possible vitriol. That would cause the rest of the chickens to either back Trump, or cower in a corner. Either will be fun to watch and will drive Hispanics away in droves. Some may end up voting Bush because of his wife, but the party brand will suffer if it can’t even speak up for it’s frontrunner’s wife.
