Trump has the lowest approval rating recorded for any President in his first year. So I’d have to get you to elaborate on your point a little more here. The disgusting things Trump have done, which you have listed in detail, have seriously harmed his standing with the majority of the country, to the point where he is a serious drag on GOP electoral hopes at all levels of government.

The problem you have now is that sickly conglomerate of die-hard GOPers and die-hard Trumpers which seems to represent the other 35-40% of the population. It’s very clear that the arguments against Trump (of which there are many) are not working… so we need to look at what gives Trump appeal.

The answer to that is simple: an image that, for his supporters, resonates more clearly than a perfectly logical argument. The image of Trump, the politically incorrect tough guy businessman straight-shooter. It’s simple, it’s appealing, and it doesn’t require an attention span to understand.

Of course it’s bullshit - but evidence isn’t going to prove that to Trump’s supporters. Creating a second, competing image - “Con Man Don” being my favourite - is the only way to pop that bubble. I’m not talking about reporting on a valid criticism - I’m talking about running a focused political campaign focused on destroying everything in his public persona that the man holds dear. Decorum be damned.

If no one knows what goes on behind closed doors means anything, these racist pigs seem to think that no one (in the general public) cares what goes on behind a microphone of a 1 million audience hate radio show. Run for office- the 2018 elections are 10 months away! And if Trump and Louie Gohmert and Steve King can get elected what’s to stop a qualified candidate?

Become a Precinct Committee Officer, sometimes it’s a Ward officer. You’ll meet with neighborhood Dems and get out the vote. Find good citizens willing to run for office.

Register people to vote. If you need to help people overcome the GOP-led Voter run-around help them do that.

Run for School Board. Make sure Civics is being properly taught. Think a majority of America knows how government works? Just 26% of eligible voters in America voted for Trump and half of eligible voters stayed home last November. Today’s 12-year olds will be voting for President in 8 years.

Run for Mayor, City Council, County Commissioner, Borough Assembly.

Get appointed to your Planning Commission. Know everything going on in your community.

Run for State Legislature or Congress. The next census is in 2020, just a year and a half from now, when we redraw Congressional Districts. And Trump is ALREADY trying to rig the census!

And get rid of GERRYMANDERING! Safe GOP seats gave us such intellectual giants as Louie Gohmert and Steve King. In most cases it’s the state Legislature that draws Congressional boundaries. Make it FAIR, OPEN and HONEST! We can do this!

Overturn Citizens United. Money is NOT speech and Corporations are NOT people- at least not until Texas executes one, and overturn any voter ID laws that are clearly an attempt to disenfranchise the poor and people of color.

I’ve thought about this for a while as well. My fear is that people who were trained at West Point/Naval Academy etc. are taught in the ways of war. (isn’t there “War College” @ these schools?) Therefore, can they be trusted to do the right thing or do they have a mental predisposition to only look at it from a war standpoint? I suppose what I’m saying/asking is–will people who are educated in war be more apt to engage in it?

I believe we have a civilian led army for a reason. Trump, in all his infinite stupidity, likes shiny objects and sees Generals as a symbol of strength. So, he will defer to these war-minded individuals as opposed to being their check and balance…what, in my opinion, a Commander-in-Chief SHOULD be.

Your thoughts on this, bird?

You’re right, it’s not like any of them are ‘super’ attractive.

There was some special about Hitler and his minions on AHC (ex-Military Channel): they were focusing on Heydrich for a while. Now, HEYDRICH was a piece of garbage, crap, poop, whatever word you want to use, but he DID match ‘Aryan’ looks and by those standards was attractive. I mean that. Horrible guy. But HE ‘fit the template.’ Not like this bunch of genetic losers.

Finding racism among Republicans and Republican appointees is like finding the hay in the haystack instead of the needle. I have always thought that racists and authoritarians are drawn to the Republican party because they are racists and authoritarians. The only crime ever about this thinking is saying it aloud. Period.

Exactly. Trump has left all of the decisions to the generals, and as a result we are dropping a shit ton more bombs and killing a lot more civilians than we were doing under Obama. General Mattis says our new strategy is annihilation tactics, and that is exactly what it sounds like. I spent most of my career in the medical field and can tell you that highly trained surgeons frequently find surgical solutions to what should be treated as medical problems. It is the nature of the training - it is the old saw that to a man with a hammer all problems look like nails.

Recently been listening to a lot of information about Watergate, the Pentagon papers, the Vietnam war - and people like McNamara and Westmoreland thought we could kill Viet Cong faster than they could be produced. It appears the same thinking has taken hold of us once again. And as a result our current biggest export is anti-Americanism. The total gutting of the State department and the diplomatic corp, along with the ascension of military men making our big decisions about how to solve world problems, is turning us into the number one scary power in the world. Our popularity is sinking as fast as Trump’s. if not faster.

I don’t know how old you are, but I remember when you would hear some terrifying quote from a world leader about death and destruction and you would wonder if it was the Soviet Union or some other megalomaniac on the world stage - now the “fire and fury” and “big button” comments come directly from our commander-in-chief. This is a scary time, and having a lot of guys who see military might and war as the first diplomatic solution to most problems does not make me feel any better about my children’s future.

EDITED TO ADD: and depending on the FBI and the CIA to save our democracy is not helping me either.

Could anyone explain me why are military men better people than the general population? I can understand why soldiers say that ( “we are the top 1% of the population, blah, blah , blah gives us all your money”), but why does the people believe them? After all you have to be pretty down on your opportunities before you consider the military, unless you are an outright thug, but even for those there are choices .

I’m 43. Born after the “hiding under your desk” drill in case of a nuclear war. Always made me chuckle that they made kids do this knowing full well it wasn’t going to stop anything. I digress…Since watching The Post, excellent by the way, I, too, have submerged myself into The Pentagon Papers as well as watched the actual Frost/Nixon interviews. After watching the Darkest Hour, I went to my local library to read up on the positions of Edward Wood (aka Lord Halifax) and Neville Chamberlain, as they were portrayed as the villains in the movie, so I wanted to get their actual side, without the bias.

What I gleaned, as it pertains to today, is that these men were of the highest intellectual caliber, I’m including Ellsberg AND Nixon in that. They had difficult and life altering decisions to make. Some were made correctly (in Ellsberg’s case) and some not (Nixon escalating Vietnam and going into Cambodia)

Trump…uhhh…is not like them. He’s the opposite of them. Flippant and impulsive. Wouldn’t know how to begin the intellectual process. His predisposition, because of his narcissism, is to pass off blame. So, of course he’s going to defer to these war-minded individuals. Because if they get it wrong, he has an out to blame them just like he did with the MOAB dropping, which we STILL have not received any report about civilian casualties, by the way. A 1 mile blast radius, I’m CERTAIN would have taken out a lot of innocent people. Needless to say, this is terribly frightening.

So, i concur with everything you said. Love the hammer/everything is a nail. I’m going to steal that.

I hope this doesn’t get worse before it gets better. We have the school yard bully’s finger on the button. Come to think of it, I’m going to practice hiding under my desk. :smile:
