While Higbie is an extreme example, we saw similar incidents under GWB’s admin. These ‘conservative activists’ are placed into such rolls without any vetting and if they get called out, just cut them loose and put someone else in their job.
They don’t vet because they really don’t care. And it’s hard to imagine the people who selected Higbie didn’t know who he is. They likely agree with him, even if they’re more careful how they speak publicly. Republican admins couldn’t fill half these positions with conservatives if they had to screen out overt racists.

Good on TPM for reporting this stuff… but I’m afraid that in the political arena, this sort of story has become the focus of the left’s public communication. I think this is a mistake.
Simplicity, aggression, confidence and an unwavering commitment to never admitting fault - it’s an image. That’s what Trump has going for him - an image. We need to start destroying that - and the best way to do so is via TV.
And forget this idea that we just need to point out how disgusting/racist/sexist he is - people already know that. I’d suggest that he needs to be portrayed as a conman - a man willing to tell you whatever is required in order to get what he wants.
I’d start running ads with a simple premise: Trump making a grandiose claim while the video shows you simple ways in which this was BS. I mean… there’s so very much material there. We also need to drop any leftover adherence to decorum: he should be consistently referred to as “Con Man Don”. It’s time to start playing this game to win.
