Discussion: Trump: New Sanctions On Iran For Not Living Up To 'Spirit' Of Nuclear Deal

This is bullshit. They are in compliance or you would not have certified the agreement every month up to now. You don’t like doing it - it rubs you the wrong way.

You are fucking lying and breaking a commitment the United States made.

Not only BS. Sanctions when Iran is complying would put the United States in violation of the treaty.

This is a signal to all other countries that the word of the United States is no good. Why would anyone agree to anything with us now. This is just like the debt ceiling. It’s not that a default on a very small subset of sovereign debt for a small amount of time is really that financially damaging. It sends the signal that a contract with us is no good.

My god, the United States of America is now a rogue nation.

And he says the U.S. will deny Iran’s paths to develop nuclear weapons.

Yeah, a Master lock on all their labs doors oughta do it. We'll just send a crew in to do it.

“Donald Trump says Iran is not living up to the ‘spirit’ of the nuclear deal that it signed in 2015…”

He wants to replace it with a younger, more attractive treaty.

It will hopefully be taken as evidence that the word of Donald Trump is bullshit. The irony of this man criticizing Iran for “not living up to the spirit” of a treaty is mind-boggling. The lack of self-awareness and ability to project onto others is stunning.

He says they’re not living up to the “spirit” of the deal, and as an example cited… the '83 Beirut Embassy Bombing?

So far trump has failed or screwed up everything he has touched, this will be no different. Antagonizing North Korea and Iran will only give the radicals reason to hate us more. Prepare for war, then thank a republican when people die.

That’s how he does his real estate deals. “The other party violated the spirit of our contract, so even though they complied with the terms and completed the job, I’m stiffing them on the final big payment.”

What would Trump rather have: An Iran that supports and finances terrorism without nuclear capability or an Iran that supports and finances terrorism with nuclear capability? The answer is self-evident with a side conclusion, i.e. Trump is a dangerous buffoon.

Congratulations on your new nuclear nation status, Iran.

This speech was an absolute nightmare of derp. I had initially thought that McMaster would be able to get Congress on board to keep the Iran deal in place but had cautioned that Cotton could be a wildcard here. After seeing excerpts of Trump’s remarks and more references to Cotton, I’m changing my position and I think this does in fact amount as a strategy to kill the Iran deal or to so violate its ‘spirit’ that the US would be in breach of it and Iran would technically be able to walk away.

The thing is that Iran doesn’t want to walk away and they’re not dumb enough to give Trump, a very dumb person, a pretext to escalate to war. Our European allies will have to salvage this deal while the US figures itself out. The presence of Cotton in this debate makes me very skeptical that the Congress will pass anything.

What we’re seeing now is that Trump and the GOP have stacked a loaded time bomb at the end of this year with CSR payments, CHIP, Iran nuke deal, taxes, Puerto Rico/USVI relief and DACA and is welcoming a government shut down over the whole thing if he can’t get his wall or some other kind of ‘win’.

None of his positions is popular but he doesn’t care. He’s trying to establish a willingness to let the whole thing burn down in order to satisfy his ego. I don’t see much from the GOP that demonstrates they can stop it. It will have to be the voters, doing what they did in the ACA debate, to pick apart all of these various issues and force Congress to shut Trump down and pass a continuing resolution to continue the Obama budget in place for another fiscal year.

It’s weird…

Under “Weak, wimpy, aloof, and totally globally disrespected” Obama we had a non-nuclear North Korea and Iran willingly abandoned it nuclear ambitions

Under “Tough, strong, and totally makes all our enemies quake in their boots and our allies swoon with pride… and maybe a little lust” Trump…

We’re an international laughing stock, North Korea has nukes and is openly mocking us, and Iran is most likely soon to follow suit.

Can we go back to the days when we were supposedly “being disrespected all over the world” again… it seems like people respected us more then.

Let’s see. California is burning, Puerto Rico is devastated, healthcare is now gutted, north Korea is testing nukes. Why not back out of ANOTHER international agreement that was developed to keep mankind’s tenuous grasp on the future. Sure. The rubes will be happy.

North Korea acquired nuclear weapons during the W. Bush years.

Our arguments are weightier when they are both correct in spirit and correct in fact.

I’m not sure what is his complaint against Iran. I mean, T rump and every last one of his Secretaries violate the spirit of the US Constitution every single day.

This makes the US look great in the mind of the world. Do not make an agreement with these guys. If political change happens than they will throw a hissy fit and back out of their deal. What makes them think that going this route is any better? Or that the US doing this sort of thing alone proves anything.

They either broke the deal or they did not. The whole spirit of it matters sometimes but in international issues it is the letter of the law.

The moral of the lesson is do not trust the US.

The sure a shit weren’t able to lob them over Japan. Being able to detonate one on your own soil is one thing… being able to attach them to and ICBM now is a major change in the dynamic
