Makes you really wonder if, when push comes to shove, the thing that finally drives him to actually throw in the towel is going too long without golf and schmoozing with sycophants at Mar-a-Fatso.
Just about everything during the trump administration has been entirely predictable. But I’ll admit, this is the second time I’ve been genuinely surprised. (I honestly didn’t think he’d ever sit down face-to-face with Kim Jung Un.) And I’m genuinely surprised his staff has managed to keep him away from Mar a Lago over Christmas and the weekends since.
I think he understands completely what would happen if he did that. I suspect he’s really scared, especially with as much new stuff coming up about a counterintelligence investigation into his activities and other stuff that is coming to light. He’s getting slammed from many sides, including from some conservatives. He can’t afford to take a PR hit like this.
His one and only talent is understanding his target audience. Beyond that, it’s all gobbledygook to him. But optics like this, this he gets.
There was a report that the kitchen at Mar-a-Fatso was kind of on the cruddy side and the food sucked.
Maybe, even the pig he is,he can’t stand the food.
This comes as no surprise, with the boss having a palate for which Big Macs, KFC and ketchup on well-done, shoe-leather steak is considered “haute cuisine.”
And without bothering to see if I can find photos of the damned place, I am willing to bet that Mar-a-Fatso is done up in tasteless “dictator chic”…
The only remotely satisfying thing about this shutdown is that even he realizes that he can’t golf while people aren’t being paid. This is probably the first time in his entire adult life that he has been forced to deal with the consequences of his actions–even as mild a consequence as this one.
I had that thought as well, but then I realized – while he won’t be able to stay away from Mar a Gordo for much longer – he’s also incapable of compromise. I expect, therefore, he’ll soon be partying it up in Florida as the trash continues to pile up in national parks and federal employees struggle without pay.
I have an optic problem ever since Trump was elected.
It is called “Optical Rectitis”,a shitty outlook on life.
Yes, if it were “only” the shutdown, he’d be flaunting it at every opportunity. As unpopular as it is with mostly everybody, it is red meat for the base. But at this point even I-1 realizes that maintaining a high profile only exacerbates the shitstorm he finds himself in and makes him look ever weaker.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re right. I think it’s only fear that it holding him in place right now, but sooner or later it’s inevitable that his impulses get the better of him.
He’ll have no problem with image among his base. Nothing excites them like watching their hero drive a sharp stick into someone’s eye. Besides, gubmint is evil.
So clueless about the optics of his sell out and subservience to Putin. So concerned not to play Marie Antoinette during the shutdown created by his reversal on bipartisan deal.
Being stuck doing presidential looking stuff will probably drive him even further off the edge and be his ultimate downfall. It sure as hell won’t be Republicans admitting the president has no clothes. They may not be talking with Putin, but they are also treasonist by putting party over country the way they are. Republicans in Nixon’s day at least somewhat acknowledged their guy was a crook and needed to go…
It must be too early in the day. I am still trying to wrap my head around the use of Trump and mindful in a single sentence, and in such close proximity.
If he really wants to look presidential, he could always ask the Senate to let him sign a few bills (hint, hint).
Why should Dotard worry? They’re just “free vacations”, paid by the US taxpayer.
from the archives POMPEII (AP) - Vesuvius erupted early this morning over the prosperous sea side resort of Pompeii. As ash fell from the sky and the earth shook, citizens took shelter where they could. Some fleeing the city, a few more intelligent ones taking cover in the storage areas by the docks and the basements of homes to escape the searing heat.
This reporter will visit the town tomorrow and interview merchants about the economic costs of the situation.
Ovens in Oplontis and Naples also frequently emit ash and sparks, and these can cause damage and discomfort for the inhabitants.
That’s why I feel that Democrats should taunt him with golf. Childish? Yes. But Trump is a child.

although, to be fair, the place was built and owned by heiress marjorie post - that’s where all the exotica comes from
it’s AP - I enjoyed their excellent use of false equivilancy with the long list of good presidents who also had government shutdowns
