Discussion for article #238586
Is 24% really a āmassive leadā?
Ted Cruz is still ardently defending Trump, hoping to capitalize from ferret-headās current ranking in the polls.
Excellent. So when Donald eventually sinks under the bombastic weight of his inflammory rhetoric, he can take Teddy with him on his one-way trip to political irrelevance.

So, to answer your query; noā¦not so much. More like a ātidy bitā of a lead
When the loudest and least-capable candidate leads the pack, it says more about the GOP electorateās perception of the rest of the field than it does about Trumpās viability in the long run.
What the WAPO article says is:
Although the sample size for the final day was small, the decline was statistically significant. Still, it is difficult to predict what could happen to Trumpās support in the coming days and weeks as the controversy plays out.
In other words, it might be a statistical error due to a small sample size and basically we donāt know shit, but because itās Trump and itās great click bait, weāll speculate anyway.

anti-establishmentism and the stoking of xenophobic and racial paranoia.~Josh Marshall
I agree with Josh on this one. Trump is the chicken coming home to roost for the GOP. Even if his numbers fall off, it wonāt last. He will come out swinging against Mexicans, Arabs, Democrats, Bush etc and the base will eat it up. Trump knows how to rile the base and that is all he needs.
You canāt be referring to that ādeep, deep benchā of Republicans running for President that the pundits crawl over each other to trumpet, can you?
Well, considering how fractured the GOP electorate is at this moment, I would say yeah.
I can only think that Rumpās polling has JEB concerned because, ultimately, he needs to get that part of the base enough on his side to vote for him even if they have to hold their noses to do it. That base held their noses twice before and they STILL have that uppity _____ in the White House. JEB needs to make sure that the Rump part of the GOP base doesnāt throw their support to Cruz or Paul, no matter if itās a losing endeavor.
Trump will not be the nominee. There are only 5 candidates that could win the nomination and they are Bush, Walker, Kasich, Rubio or Cruz.
It is nothing. There will be about 5 legitimate candidates that will emerge from Iowa and/or New Hamphire. By the time Florida goes there will be three top tier candidates and Rand Paul.
I agree. I was listening to Mark Halperinās and John Heilmanās execrable show on the way home, and it was a big CW-fest about how Trump is toast - and then this poll came in, and Halperin said the most wonderfully confused/panicked āWowā.
I canāt put it down to anything but my gut and what I take away from campaign events so far, but I really think this is the year the crazies insist on making one of their own the nominee - and my money remains on Cruz.
Incidentally, Halperin also had a goofy interview with him - no Spanish this time! - and i think it was the first time I heard him say anything in a normal tone of voice. His normal voice is actually pretty creepy. I think he should stick to shouting.
That is because the poll was conducted prior to his remarks. Trump will not be the nominee. He has about as much chance as Bernie does.
Nahā¦
Heās Trump āwithout the baggageā¦ā
Just tell me, please, that he said this was āgood news for McCaināā¦
I think itās wise to avoid definitive statements regarding an unprecedented phenomenon, which is what Trump is. No one with enough money to completely self fund and who has a long-standing media presence has ever run for president, The only analogous case is not from the US, but from Italy, Silvio Trumpusconi, and he managed to win several times. In fact, despite multiple indictments and convictions, he is still a player in Italian politics and could even be PM again . You may think that canāt happen here, but I donāt.
Well āDuh!āā¦Of course they love him and heās basically bulletproof to criticism:
#1 Heās richer than Romney.
#2 Heās whiter than Huckabee.
#3 Heās crazier than Carson.
#4 Heās more delusional than Piyush.
#5 He hates unions more than Walker.
#6 Heās a bigger hate filled clown than Cruz
#7 Heās a bigger hypocrite than either Christie or radio gasbag Limbaugh.
ā¦Long story short: He embodies everything the Republican Cons and Baggers worship and all in one package!
Since 2000, all of American politics has reduced to a contest between the candidate of the people on the left hand side of the intelligence bell curve and those on the right hand side of the curve, with the people in the middle deciding the election.
Itās 2x his next nearest out of 15 candidates or so.
A couple good things out of all this. Trump is providing comedy gold for comedians and he is writing some fine attack ads for the democrats to use.
