This looks like overkill. I can’t think of a good reason why Trump would personally get involved in this. This is what the FAA is for.
LEADERSHIP
Wait … what?
Everybody else already did it?
Fun surprise: the FAA does not currently have a permanent administrator, because after Congress laughed at the idea of Trump’s personal pilot serving in the role, he has not offered any other nominee.
Holy Crap! Never thought I’d see the day where Pres Ind 1 did something he was actually supposed to do.
And the FAA didn’t. Probably on Trump’s orders.
Trump: first to whine, last to take constructive action.
“Our hearts go out to all of those…" didn’t say the man who doesn’t have a heart and never thinks of anyone’s feelings other than his own.
“It’s a terrible terrible thing Boeing is an incredible company. … Hopefully they will very quickly come up with an answer,…" says the guy who postponed an in-progress solution by 35 days because, dammit, he wants Wall!
Guess someone told him everyone would hold him personally responsible if one dropped out of the sky.
Trump is leading from behind.
From a safety point of view, this seems like it’s probably the right call (it helps that there aren’t many heavily-737MAX fleets out there). From a purely amoral corporate protectionist standpoint, it seems like it’s probably the right call – Boeing stockholders will probably be happy to have this story moving off of the front page and especially out of popular conversation. Grounded planes aren’t talked about as much. Frankly, I can’t come up with a viewpoint from which this doesn’t seem like the right choice.
Would you want to take the chance? If there was even the slightest chance there was actually something wrong with these planes and one went down, even for Trump it would be a political calamity from which he would never recover.
Well yeah, but since Boeing donated 1 million to his inauguration, he doesn’t want people talking.
Trump is a leading behind.
FIFY!
This is what happens when your campaign manager gets read the riot act by the Judge, she doubles his jail time, and then your old buddy Cy Vance (who let your own kids off the hook) nails him for a 16 count indictment on real estate fraud, which is an area on which you have great exposure and vulnerability and for which there really is no political counter maneuver to use in response.
His base never assigns blame to Trump for anything. I don’t believe they’d see this as Trump’s problem.
I don’t see his base as the jet setting type.
He is not supposed to be doing this. That’s what the FAA is for, just wants to be able to take credit. Hopefully instread of letting the IRS handle it, he goes collecting unpaid taxes himself.
Yesterday revealed that he ‘might’ be in Boeing’s pocket. So this directive is supposed to make him look manly.
It won’t work, but hey, popcorn?
Watching the Boeing effect in real time on my investments
My sister is an airline pilot and she described a sinking feeling the day after the Ethiopian airline went down when she had to take the controls of a 737 Max even though she was telling us the numbers on how many of these planes are in the air and flying without major incident.
I guess my issue is that Trump issuing this proclamation is in keeping with the idea that the government is Trump and Trump is the government.
