The āmediaā are all businesses that have a fiduciary responsibility to give people what they fucking want. People wanted to see what Trump said, not what Marco or Jeb said. But to make the leap that āthe media is (mostly) complicitā doesnāt follow. The media are, because thatās the verb and it makes a difference, willingly going along with the damage Trump is causing? I fucking want you and everyone else who says that bullshit to prove that āmostlyā or knock it the fuck off. Iām getting good and sick of it. For my part I could show you scores and scores of people fighting this thing with dogged persistence and skill. I could show you Trump railing against the media, saying donāt believe them. Why the fuck is he doing that? Doesnāt that complicate your argument just a bit? I could show you Katy Tur being escorted out of a rally by the Secret Service so the howling mob doesnāt attack her. I need hardly mention the people in Annapolis gunned down for doing their jobs for which they were paid like $24K a year if they were lucky. I AM FUCKING SICK OF THIS SHIT. So yeah, Iām not being facetious.

Every word in that sentence is true. The media putatively exists to inform the public of truths they havenāt the time, connections, resources or inclination to ferret out on their own.
The media, while not proactively ignoring the danger of Trump, passively and negilgently does a damn miserable job of speaking truth to power. NBC, CBS and ABC donāt avoid labeling Trump for what he is, starkly and unambiguously, out of any sense of journalisitc propriety. They abstain from doing it for fear of alienating some of their audience and sponsers. They arenāt motivated by seeking and speaking truths. Theyāre motivated by ratings and money.

This act from the president should be seen as a slap in the face for most of us. The dispute, as these rancher cases in the West have been, was about access to wetlands on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, a long-protected site in the Pacific flyway. Cattle are an invasive species that allow for extraction of vegetation to be converted into money. Not beautiful, but extractive industries are sort of the first step in organizing civilization. Nowadays we may place a higher value on the land than its extraction value, and as a society we decided that some of our high-value habitat lands have to be preserved for the animals and plants survival. Again, a step needed in organizing civilization. The Hammonds relied on ānaturalā law, sovereign citizenship and other kooky notions to justify their selfish behavior. Guess what? A lot of Americans would like to indulge their selfish behaviors. It did, after all, create many of the great fortunes in the 19th and early 20th century. This really is the āboundless solipsismā that Madeleine Albright identified was the hallmark of emerging fascism.
