Discussion: Trump In Florida: 'You Can Count On' Action To Prevent Future Shootings

What you can count on is Trump will make a generic statement of concern and then change his mind and go in a different direction… maybe he will even make an executive order that goes opposite his initial statement

Obviously nothing will happen as Trump is in cahoots with the NRA who are in cahoots with Russia. He dare not anger them in any way. I would love to see some NRA indictments at some point.

I am encouraged, however, that so many young people are daring to speak out for sensible gun laws. Perhaps social media can amplify their voices and, for a change, some good can result from it?

I’ll take an all American kid over a Russian bot all day every day.

Just like Vegas, baby! Get some pics. Visit a young lady who took four rounds. Say some NRA sanctioned crapola. Off to golf. That was easy.

Today’s America. President goes to see victims of a shooting and reporters want to know about his screwing a model. A man of the people.

Trump replied: “You can count on it.”

He says a lot of stuff. If you were in terrible need of a dinosaur he would promise you one to your face. If he left and someone asked him about it halfway down the hall, asked how he would make that happen, he’d say this is the first he’s hearing about it and he didn’t remember promising anyone a dinosaur. So I don’t think we’ll be holding our breath waiting for the action.

In other news, if you want to feel a frisson of disgust on an otherwise fine morning, look at the pictures of him with the young woman who was shot. He and the family are lined up, grinning, and he’s got his goddamn thumb up. You’d think he was congratulating the winner of a national spelling bee.

I read about a proposed teacher’s strike on May 1st. I think this is a brilliant idea … . Gosh, I was really hoping he’d run into one of those enraged mothers that was on CNN.

And a national student strike also, I believe. Kids shall lead the way.

Right. Sure. If Trump said the sun rises in the east I’d look west. Trump’s lies even have grandkids now.

Run for office- and run FOR something! Don’t just run against Trump. You’ll either be preaching to the choir or confirming, in some people’s minds, that ‘the elites’ are out to get their man.

Get REAL specific, too. You want to run on jobs or healthcare reform or the new landfill? You must have a plan. THEN you can point out the difference between having a plan and promising to work on a plan sometime in the future.

This site, https://www.runforoffice.org/, allows you to enter your ZIP code and see what offices are available to you and the filing window for that office. They also have a few video short-courses on running a campaign. In my state you file for office during a 1-week period in May, just three months from now.

Become a Precinct Committee Officer, sometimes it’s a Ward officer. Meet your neighbors and get out the vote. Find good citizens willing to run for office.

Run for School Board. Make sure Civics is being properly taught. Think a majority of America knows how government works? Just 26% of eligible voters in America voted for Trump, and half of all voters stayed home last November. Today’s 10-year olds will be voting for President in 8 years.

Run for Mayor, City Council, County Commissioner, Borough Assembly. And get on your Planning Commission.

Run for State Legislature or Congress. The next census is in 2020 when we’ll redraw Congressional Districts. Trump is ALREADY trying to rig the census- talk about ‘voter fraud’!

Register people to vote. If you need to help people overcome the GOP-led Voter run around help them do that. This site, https://www.aauw.org/resource/organize-a-voter-registration-drive/, has a how-to on organizing a voter registration drive. Or even sitting outside Wal Mart with a folding chair and a card table.

Civics, civility and civilization all share the same roots. Get crackin’!

But he extended few public words of consolation to those in deep mourning.

Trump said he originally planned to visit the Parkland area on Sunday or Monday, but decided he didn’t want to wait. But as Trump arrived in Florida, some of the parents, survivors and others affected by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School said they were more interested in firm action to prevent future assaults than a presidential visit.

Guessing that decision was made within minutes of his raging after learning about Ronnan Farrow’s breaking story.

Yes @mattinpa the dorky smile with the Wheaties-champion type thumbs up is some kind of ugly awkward. Like tossing paper towel rolls at people weathering through a horrific hurricane’s aftermath. Dude has not a whit of capacity for human empathy or sympathy. It seems he just can not feel concern of another human being.

There’s not a school in this country that doesn’t have a creepy, brooding misfit lurking around. When I was a kid, I didn’t think he’d shoot the place up with a military rifle and a backpack of magazines. But I think today three-quarters of the school population looks at that kid and thinks “He’d be the one.” They have every right to ask the adults to do something about not letting dangerous people have weapons of war. BTW you should have seen all the high-school-age volunteers working their hearts out at the local Democratic HQ during the last cycle.

Can’t feel it and too Johnny-one-note to pretend. It’s absolutely grotesque in the wake of this shooting.

Says the man who was expelled from school when he was a boy, too.

By the way–these calls for Wray to resign as head of the FBI: suspicious? Russian led?

If nothing else read the last sentences of this piece. POTUS is shameless. It is all about grabbing the glory.

At the end, Michael Leonard, the officer who found the gunman and handcuffed him, gave a 15-second soliloquy explaining his actions. The president was not satisfied, so he elaborated for the officer:“Thatwas so modest, I would have told it much differently,” Trump said. “I would have said without me, they never would have found him.”

No capacity for empathy. No real expression of sympathy. Empty words for those killed, injured and suffering loss. He can congratulate first responders and medical teams for action - but he really has no concept of what’s involved with that either.

Soulless, despicable man.

I don’t think so. I think it is deflection of attention to Scott’s role (and the role of the Florida statehouse) for the pro NRA legislation they have supported over the years. Find a way to see it’s not OUR fault or OUR laws - it was a mistake by the FBI - roil the public to rally to cry 'Off WIth His Head!" (or out of his job! in this case) to ensure that the crowd ignores the direct role that their own ‘public servants’ have acted to make them less safe from these types of horrific events.

They also told him to stay away. These are savvy teenagers. They read the news and understand the power of NRA money. No one talks about the guns. NO. ONE

The hypocrisy of three of the most self absorbed, tone deaf people on the planet visiting victims of the Parkland massacre. Last February, Trump signed a bill, passed by Republican Senators,Marco Rubio included, and Republican members of Congress ,Paul Ryan , Kevin McCarthy included, making it easier for mentally ill persons to buy a gun. This bill allowed the parkland shooter to buy the semiautomatic weapon and 30 shell magazines he used to carry out the mass murder of 17 innocent schoolchildren and teachers.
Governor Scott, may share a larger share of the blame for this massacre in Florida, After the mass murder in the Pulse nightclub, Governor Scott did nothing, nothing but offer hollow, robotic thoughts and prayers. He did nothing to restrict the sale of military grade weapons to the mentally ill or anyone with a pulse.

Based on past experience from you, donnie, we get thoughts you won’t spend time having and prayers you don’t believe anyway. And NRA money is always more important than kids lives. EVERY GODDAMNED TIME.

Will it take young Barron getting shot in the head?

I hope not.

He’s a narcissist. There’s no chance he feels anyone else’s pain through the miasma of his own thoughts, feelings, and self-regard.

What’s going to make him really angry is when people compare his “bedside manner” to Obama’s. PBO was a compassionate, thoroughly decent man who seemed to always have the right words which were truly heartfelt. Would anyone say that about Trump?
