Itās times like these I get very upset at those mental health providers who hold out judgement on whether Trump has a personality disorder. All reputable providers Iāve spoken with agree heās a textbook narcissist. The only debate among them is whether his dysfunction qualifies as a disorderā¦ defined as doing things that are genuinely harmful to his own self-interest, because heās unwilling or unable to behave differently when circumstances call for it. The more awful the situation, the more clearly Trump demonstrates that he canāt change his internal channel.
edited to add for clarity: I know that a great many mental health providers have indeed weighed in on this subject. My point is that the mental health community is not unanimous on this front ā not even remotely. They are truly divided over Trumpās status with respect to having a disorder. Thatās a term which has a specific mental health meaning, and is quite distinct from just being weird, or an asshole, or even checking the boxes for a DSM profile. To me, thatās inexplicable; whenever heās faced with an even slightly unfamiliar situation, and is forced to react in real-time rather than rolling out some word jumble that he knows people will want to hear, you get weird, often self-damaging Trumpian disordered nonsense. Every. Single. Time. There are psychiatrists who watch Fox News too, or are more mundane low-information voters. I can only hope theyāre truly not exposed to the rest of what he really says and does, and thatās the only reason they withhold judgementā¦
