Discussion: Trump: I Didn't Know Hand-Raising Pledge At Rallies Was A Problem (VIDEO)

One thing is for sure. Not one of these buggers is going to live long and prosper.

Yes, I had said yesterday this whining would actually help Trump. And it did.

This is no different than the Glen Beck thing comparing Obama to Hitler. It’s childish idiocy coming from people who crave attention. And in that respect, those people are actually just like Trump.

Stick to attacking issues and substance. Not making stuff up.

Still find it appalling now in reflection that so many of these people automatically fully extended their arms instead of raised them in a pledge. It’s like they had been doing it for years. You’d think domestic militia members would be preoccupied pointing automatics rifles at anything ā€œforeignā€ which moved on this side of the border.

IMO, Trumph has been studying Mussolini. Look at his body posture. Look at the low grade violence in his rallies. His antics scream ā€œfascismā€ from top to bottom. Trump is not ignorant. He knows very well what he is doing.

Donald J. Trump now having his followers swear loyalty oaths, has plainclothes guards and tight media restrictions.

It’s no longer a flirtation with fascism. Trump has moved in with fascism and they’re picking out curtains.

.
Whatever happened to rallies to inform voters and let them make informed choices?

That is precisely my take on it. He is fascinated with demogogues in general for style points, not because of their underlying philosophy. He finds their use of rhetoric appealling, not necessarily the nuts and bolts of the underlying Fascism.

And if we are perfectly honest, Mussolini was’t the grand architect and true believer of Fascism, either. He started his political career as a devout left wing socialist. But when he saw what the fascists were doing in the streets, he quickly sensed a personal opportunity and abandoned left wing politics for the right.

I’ll buy that. There’s certain bits of facial business too, like the outthrust jaw. At this point only his hairdresser knows for sure which dictator he considers the most fantabulous. But as he not-so-slowly goes even crazier we may get more evidence to consider. Stay tuned, folks!

Trump is really that ignorant and racist and stupid. He claimed he had the worlds greatest memory, remember? He should surely know of the events in 1930’s Germany and the huge rallies the Nazis staged and the uplifted right arms. To say he doesn’t know of this behavior is beyond rational. To say the comparison is a stretch is a stretch of credulity. All he would need to do is take a look at the web. He can twitter so he knows how to use a device.
That he is aping Hitler ought to fucking disqualify him for American citizenship and get him deported to Argentina. Far too many people died due to Hitler for Trump to just brush this shit off.

What he lacks is some sort of stirring, martial anthem; a kind of ā€œTrump-Wesselā€ song to really pull it together. Glockenspiels all around.

Darr, one thing we haven’t mentioned is how people learn about this stuff. He’s a classic Boomer, born in '46. For all of what we’ll laughingly call his formative years he was seeing images of Nazi rallies in newsreel footage and popular culture generally. Nobody born in that time could possibly, possibly fail to understand what that shit he started doing Saturday looks like. There’s every other reason to doubt his ridiculous claims as well. We do have a couple of posters who claim not to see it, but normal people can’t miss it, it hits you in the face like a two-by-four. One more astonishing lurch downward in this ever-more-sickening campaign.

the stunning part is that he doesn’t even need to show up to get all this free air time. He just sits in his BVDs and makes a series of phone calls and everyone jumps to put him on the air. Disgusting.

Bum rap alert.
So where will we find the Americans and Allies to restore freedom after a Trump takeover?

This is an interesting one, because (at least to me) there’s nothing inherently wrong with asking supporters to raise their hand to pledge their support. And yet when Trump does it, it does remind me of Hitler.

Now to a Trump supporter, this surely seems like an unfair double standard. But in my view it’s a perfectly reasonable double standard – when the person asking for the ā€œpledgeā€ is spewing toxic racist and xenophobic venom, telling Big Lie after Big Lie, promising to bring back and ratchet up torture and collective punishment, of course they’re more likely to come off as Hitleresque.

Similarly, if a Buddhist monk is dressed in white robes while preaching peace and tolerance, I wouldn’t make the same associations as if it was someone wearing white robes while preaching bigotry and racism and burning a cross on the front lawn of a black family. In other words, context matters.

I am kinda getting scared at this point for the country. This asshole is too close for comfort to the nuclear button.

Agree. there are so many instances where a group of people are asked to raise their hands, and up goes the right hand. It’s innocuous. Yes, people are looking to the substance of Trump’s rhetoric for the context of this particular pledge, but the press should have stayed with that. Claiming that the hand is now a Nazi salute plays into Trump’s camp.

Context, and patterns, and explanations in which all the evidence fits coherently. No Western political figure has done this in 60 years precisely because of its indelible associations. We know Trump’s interested in Hitler, we know he’s an authoritarian, we know he talks about national revival, we know brutality, leader-worship, racial indentity and lots of other fun retro stuff is key to his movement, we know when he’s called on it he obfuscates in a way we know by now means he’s lying and bullshitting. I think the possibility that this happened randomly, that it’s a coincidence, is vanishingly close to zero. I think we all—well, most of us —think that.

Join the club. It’s large and has all the best people in it, if that’s any comfort.

There is no sticking to the issues high ground with Trump. HE IS THE ISSUE because he’s MADE HIMSELF THE ISSUE. He is obviously using tried and true fascist propaganda techniques – from striking the puffed up Il Duce pose, the Nazi salute, scapegoating and threatening minorities in his pronouncements, and using mass brainwashing techniques at his rallies. His supporters are no longer thinking for themselves – they are part of Trump brain – so no logical discussion of the issues will do any good. The only way to confront this mass delusion is to keep pointing out the fucking obvious so that EVERYONE who is not under the spell knows they will have to gets off their asses and vote against this unapologetic fascist.

Matt, I now see no limit to what this demagogue can get away with saying. And still those convinced of his worth as POTUS are blinded by him. I feel like the guy at a 1936 rally who refused to salute Hitler. It’s a common image via google. I posted a link to it yesterday. I am having a hard time convincing myself that millions of my countrymen and women are so ignorant and unaware they cannot see what Trump is.It takes the word ā€œdisturbingā€ to its ultimate limit for me.
