Besides which, smuggling, running blockades and breaking trade embargoes have a long and honored history in this country going back to the days before the Puritans (many of whom were smugglers in the auld country) wet-backed the Atlantic Ocean. Treason is the only crime defined in the Constitution and breaking the trade embargo with Cuba doesn’t (in my opinion) come close to meeting the criteria. Treason consists of, “levying war against the United States, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.” We are not at war with Cuba, nor is Cuba an enemy state.
Don’t let’s overreach on this: here is the important part of Eichenwald’s story: Trump went before the Cuban emigré community in 2000 and told them that the embargo should go on as long as a Castro remains in the government and in fact it ought to be strengthened. He did this knowing that he had sent emissaries to Havana to negotiate deals with the Castro government.
The moral of the story: Trump is in it for Trump. He will do whatever he has to do to establish dominance and benefit himself. To Trump there is apparently no such thing as fact and language is certainly not used to convey facts.
I really want Trump to own his wack conspiracies at the next debate. Any chance someone could ask him what he considers a reliable source of news. He has said, he doesn’t trust the mainstream media, has singled out both the Times and the Washington Post as liars. He is 80% there toward revealing that his primary sources are the wacky alt-right, but I’d like to see admit it explicitly. Hell, I’d like someone to ask him whether or not he thinks Alex Jones is a reliable source of information, since that seems to be where he gets things.
Similarly, he needs to be confronted with his many statements he thinks that climate change is a hoax (independent of the China “joke” thing), whether he believes vaccines cause autism, that there really is no drought in California…etc and press him for yes or no answers and where he gets his information.
It is instructive to grasp the evil of Trump. Because, in a stable country like this one (with all its flaws), there are certain customs on which it depends. To Trump, there is no “custom” he will not use to attain power.
Trump could act 100X worse in the next two Debates and he would simply turn to other courses of action…as we see here.
Trump is, basically, involved in a government takeover and if more people read about dictators using democratic methods to attain power they would more accurately look at Trump.
Whenever Trump perceives himself to be losing, the whining stick comes out. Polls show him behind? “The election’s gonna be rigged!” The debate goes badly because he refused to prepare for it? “My mike didn’t work! I was asked unfair questions!” There’s a lot of aggregated news stories who say his campaign going badly? “They’re suppressing all the bad news about my opponent!”
Me, too!!! My ‘payback’ is that all my nieces and nephews turned out to be good liberals MUCH to the consternation of my brothers…they blame it ALL on me. HAHAHAHAHA!
