Discussion: Trump Doesn't Correct Voter Who Says Obama Is Muslim, Not American

Discussion for article #240687

How can his fan base be satisfied with vague generalities such as “We’ll look into it”? Either call these yahoos on their bullshit or really throw them some red meat!

What?!! Trump is confronted by a birther and doesn’t correct him? Oh right, that Trump.

Hey, you can’t alienate your base…he just ignored it, a great way of justifying the comment…yet also being able to say you did not justify it…slick. What a punk.

At least McCain corrected the nut jobs in classy fashion.

But how can he correct them when his investigators have been in Hawaii for the past 8 years. He needs to wait until the investigation is complete…

"His campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, later gave an interview to the Washington Post, further addressing Trump’s response to the question.

‘Mr. Trump was asked about training camps. Mr. Trump answered the question and said, ‘If there are any, we will fix it.’ He said, ‘I will look into it.’ The question was specifically about training camps,’ Lewandowski said.

When asked by the Post if Trump believes Obama is a Muslim, Lewandowski said, ‘I don’t speak for Mr. Trump.’"

He said, immediately after speaking for Mr. Trump.

I saw one of his supporters on MSNBC last night clumsily yet forcefully dodging all around the questions about this.

Because that’s what they do.

Classy, for sure. Although, his comment did seem to imply there was a contrast between being an Arab and being decent…

I did give him the benefit of the doubt on that, and still do.

Trump was merely responding to the base of the Republican Party!

Not surprisingly, even Trump’s campaign manager is a weasel. But I’m sure as President he would only get the classiest people to work for him.

The only no-go zones and terrorist training camps in the United States are operated by the likes of Cliven Bundy and the Oaf Creepers. Tax evading, government mooching, white Christians all.

The thing that stands out to me about this, and the other exchanges we saw last night, was the barely suppressed rage in the voices of the speakers. These people have had their fears stoked into a sense that they have actually lost something and are in danger as a result of it. To them, Obama has done them a tangible wrong, and the fact that there has been no such wrong is immaterial. Trump refused to do anything to reduce their anger at Obama because he relishes the love the anger directs toward him.

Thanks.

I just caught the last few minutes of her spinning.

Funny thing, the Today Show on NBC just reported on this in its first few seconds.

But will his poll numbers go up again?

Yes

I don’t think the average Trump supporter can go that deep. When you think that Obama is a non-American Muslim, having an intellectual curiosity about what “We’ll look into it” means is pretty much non-existent. Trump supporters are idiots. He can literally say anything, and as long as it vaguely fits their tiny worldview they’ll believe it without question.

This is what really grabbed me as well. In the McCain incident from 2008, the crazy-haired old lady seemed more confused. Last night’s fellow (and the Cliven Bundy esque 2nd questioner) expressed that unique, highly dangerous crowd-masked coward’s rage that grows exponentially in the illusory safety of a mob.
Trump’s “we need this question now” remark, to me, didn’t telegraph support for the remark but clear knowledge of widespread support for this position among his fringe-haunted followers.
But, what shocked me more than the racist hate we’ve come to associate with the GOP, were comments heard on MSNBC following the event from reporters who allegedly ‘cover’ the Trump campaign expressing surprise at the increasing fascist element that many here at TPM have noticed for weeks. How can anyone, at this stage and in supposed close contact with Trump world, express surprise at this birther hate?

Having trouble deciding whether the stupidity of the question or the emptiness of the answer is more pitiful.
