Seriously, a police officer died trying to get to work in flooded Houston. Trump is oblivious to the human tragedy and heroism here–People greater in their struggles than he will ever be in triumph. He cannot see or acknowledge that, at all.

Houston us going to be a disaster for a long time. He doesn’t have the patience for the long haul recovery. He doesn’t even SEE the disaster right now, and this will become a shitshow when the rain stops and the true extent of the damage is clear. He’ll behave for a week or so then want to know what is taking so long for his congrats to come in.

Amen. Empathy cannot be taught. People can learn to do a reasonable impression of an empathetic person, but the actual feeling of empathy is either there or it isn’t. Trump, however, because of his many other personality deficiencies, cannot be taught to mimic normal human feelings. When he tries, like his second statement after Charlottesville, it becomes a grotesque kind of simulation of a human feeling, like CGI characters that are close but just wrong.
He does not understand that just saying the words does not actually count for most people who can sense, even through the camera, that there is no actual corresponding human feeling behind the words. It infuriates him. It ties into his whole notion of being able to “act more presidential than anybody you have ever seen”. He doesn’t get it and he never will - not because he is 71, but because these basic elements of a fully formed mature personality have never been there and cannot be acquired after adolescence.
