In Trump’s defense, “basket of deplorables” represents a poorly-chosen phrase, as it fails to account for scale.
“A barge full of deplorables” would have been a more apt descriptor.
I cringed when I read Hillary’s comment and am concerned that this is an unforced error. Labeling a candidate is one thing, but derisively labeling voters (even if there is truth in the label) is unwise. I hope I’m wrong and this doesn’t become a setback to Hillary’s campaign.
I would love for Hillary to call a press conference where all she does is read direct quotes from Trump, Lewandowski, Bannon, Bossie, David Duke, etc.
Then watch Trump try to defend those statements and make a bigger ass of himself, because he can’t help but double down.

I am not sure about a setback to HRC, but my feeling is she didn’t get a single vote because of it, but may have harden a few and caused a few more to vote for Trump. She gained nothing.

Of course the media is going to spin this as equivalent to Romney’s 47% gaffe. I see the WP has already raised this as a “question.” But I think if Hillary’s campaign plays this right it could work to her advantage. Connect this with her speech about the alt-right and emphasize that this is exactly who she is referring to. Yes Trump is very attached to his white nationalists and David Duke supporters, who make up a substantial part of his backers. Of course, he won’t allow any criticism of them. But, yes, she thinks they are deplorable and un-American. Don’t back away from that.

I respectfully, but totally, disagree with your concern. Hillary said exactly what everyone knows and what most of her supporters have been waiting for her - and others! - to actually say out loud. I look forward to a week of argument over whether it’s half of Trump’s voters who are racists or only 40%.
I only hope that Hillary doesn’t back down. There are plenty of examples she can give to back up her observation, including comments by prominent Republicans. Trump has now gotten the official support of White Nationist groups. Let’s have a week of reading outloud what those Trump supporters are saying.
