You’re exactly right. I have a friend who was the director of a Meals On Wheels program in CA and she told me that many of the recipients of this program rely on the delivery not just for the food provided but for the visitation of a person who would take a few minutes to just talk to them. It was also an opportunity for someone to check in on them to see if their living situation had changed or if the person was sick or in any danger.
Also, these programs are grossly underfunded as is. She made deals with local bakeries and other food service businesses to get their leftovers - food that would otherwise have been thrown out - to help flesh out the meager meals they could make with the funds they had. Plus, they held several fundraisers each year and relied on occasional donations from local business.
These elderly people aren’t getting steak and lobster, they’re not gaming the system, and they do not feel “entitled” to these hot meals. No, they rely on them for sustenance for survival.
This is the most heartless budget proposal I’ve ever seen and I hope it sweeps these 'pub asshats out of office and out of public life permanently!

The meals in this program aren’t even free to those who receive them. Older folks pay a small amount for a small meal and some human contact. This is a service which benefits the families of the elderly as well - they can go to work with the peace of mind that grandma or grandpa eats something healthy and is checked on. Mulvaney and everyone he represents make me physically ill. He gave the same cavalier dismissal of after-school programs in lower income communities - there’s no evidence that they produce any results.

Sure you can feed healthy meals to elderly home-bound folks, but go back the next day and they’ll just want more food. Stop feeding them and the problem will soon resolve itself with exactly the “results” that Trumpublicans are looking for.

Your point about the added peace of mind for family members is something I overlooked. We’re both right about this program and I’d forgotten that the fee for this service is based on a sliding scale.
